Rescue Story: Poptart was picked up as a stray with horrific injuries to her eyes. One was completely ruptured and the other was in bad shape. She was so petrified that the officer had to use a catchpole to capture her and she was labeled ‘aggressive’ at the time of capture. We have a non-profit in Athens called AthensPets who offered to cover her initial vetting and surgery for double eye removal. After her surgery she was deemed a sweetheart at the vet, who speculated the amount of pain she was in was tremendous and led to her ‘aggressive’ state. It is believed that she was likely born with glaucoma that went untreated until the pressure built up and her eyes ruptured. She also had blisters on all four paw pads from hot pavement. We think she was likely dumped after her eye ruptured. She’d already had a litter of puppies as well. I was on a list at the shelter to be a ‘last resort, short term medical foster’ for Poptart. I volunteered at the shelter and work across the street from the vet she was at, so picked her up after work so that she wouldn’t have to go to the shelter and could heal in a quiet home. Within just a few hours, I knew she’d never be leaving. She is that special.

Photographers Note: I don’t know where to start. It was such an amazing honor to meet and photograph this special girl. Her joy and confidence are just so inspiring and you can’t help but smile at her as she races around in her various outfits. To see this dog after only being with her family for 3-ish months navigate a good size farm setting with only small verbal corrections from her Mom when she gets too close to something, is just amazing. To read her story and think she was once labeled aggressive is just so hard to believe. She is so sweet and loves to give smooches. You can tell she has never met a stranger and what huge bonus as you know this beautiful girl is meant to change perceptions. Not only for pit bull type dogs but also those dogs who may have different needs and look a little different. No one needs to feel sorry for this girl, she is living her best life which is 1000% in the present. Something we can all learn from!

Wonder Poptart!!
