Gary Fishlegs - 3/9/19

Name/Age: Gary Fishlegs - 7 y/o

Family Members: Mom- Tif & dog brother Manly McQueen - 10 year old Brussels Griffon

How long has Gary been in the family? 4 years

Profession: 5th Grade Science Teacher

Location: Norcross, GA.

Nicknames: How do you improve upon Gary Fishlegs!? Maybe just Gar for short. LOL

5 words/phrases that best describe Gary?

  1. Ball Crazy

  2. Social

  3. Adventurous

  4. Snuggler

  5. Unimpressed

What makes Gary unique? Gary likes to explore looking for things he wants (mainly balls). This leads him to climbing on top of counters, refrigerators, gym equipment...he has extreme focus when he finds what he wants and if he can’t get it he’ll stare at it for a loooong time hoping someone notices and will get it for him.

Gary being loved on at school!

Rescue Story: I went to Fulton County Animal Shelter looking for a second dog (I had lost my old Rottie and my other dog Manly was lonely for a friend). I took Manly with me and spoke with the shelter staff about what I was looking for and choose several dogs to meet. I knew I wanted a pit bull as I have a few friends that have them and I was really drawn to their personalities. Also, I knew how overrun Atlanta shelters are with them. None of the dogs I pulled out to meet were really vibing with me and my little Manly (who is only 10 lbs). They were lovely dogs, but for the most part they were too much energy or too rough with Manly. A staff member (I think his name was Malcom?) that I wasn’t even working with had overheard me talk about what kind of dog I was looking for and personality traits I desired. He came over to me and said “I think I might have a dog for you…” I told him to bring him out. I honestly don’t even remember seeing Gary (the Redtails) when I had walked through before. Manly and I were sitting on the curb outside, tired and disappointed that all the dogs we had really liked didn’t fit at all, and the second Gary was brought out he quietly came over and just “fit.” I was handed his leash and he crawled into my lap (he was skinnier then but still not a lap dog size) and he just felt like home. Manly crawled halfway on top of him and everything clicked. He wasn’t able to go home right away since he had to be neutered so I made a 30 min drive every day for 3 days to visit him while we waited so that I could ensure he could at least have some time outside each day and know that I was coming back for him. Every time I’d put him back in the run he’d curl up in the corner to avoid all the noise and stress and my heart would break for him a little. He ran across the adoption room floor on the day I finally got to take him home. The room was packed full of people and he found me on the other side; inseparable ever since. Oh, and he was heartworm positive at the time...people should never let that deter them from finding their perfect friend.

When Gary climbed into Tif’s lap at their first meeting.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Gary really has two favorite past times. One: He loves going to school. I teach 5th grade science at a public charter. I had taken my other dog Manly to school for years after showing our school’s CEO all the studies proving how beneficial dogs are in the workplace and also coming up with many lesson plans that incorporated him. Gary’s personality has always been pretty chill but I did quite a bit of training with him (and eventually got his Canine Good Citizen. We are working towards becoming Therapy Certified) before he started coming into my classroom on a regular basis. He is pretty stellar at it. He enjoys having multiple kids loving on him at once and he provides a lot of smiles and laughs all day long. He’s helped many kids become more confident and relaxed some of our most anxious students.

Second: Gary LOVES going to the gym. Luckily, my gym is very dog friendly and I initially started taking him when I was trying to socialize him as much as possible to get him ready to go to school. He ended up loving the daily trip. The second I put on my gym shoes he starts running around the house crying in excitement. I think everyone at the gym enjoys having Gary there just as much as they generally greet him before they say hello to me. He is well known for sitting in anyone’s lap that comes near him although he’ll also just wait for someone to get on the floor to stretch before running over to them to take a seat. Heaven forbid he has to sit on the floor. He also has an uncanny knack for finding any and every ball that might exist at the gym and will climb on, under or around anything to get to them.

Gary’s school picture!

Thanks for the seat!

What is life like since you rescued Gary? After rescuing Gary, I found it important to take action and make sure that more people know just how wonderful pit bulls are and that they need our help. My students often become pit bull advocates after being around him so much. I also have fallen into rescue and have fostered a few pit bull puppies (among others). Gary has been a fantastic ambassador and has led me to speak out and speak up to others about pit bulls. One of the best texts I ever received was a picture of a pit bull puppy lying on a bed...a friend of mine from the gym had just adopted him and said that it was Gary that had led him to like pit bulls so much and want one.

Photographers Note: Tif suggested we meet at her school to do the photo shoot, as Gary spends a lot of time there. I thought it was a great idea and when I arrived I was surprised to see there were students in session. Apparently some extra study time on a Saturday for some up coming tests. So we made our way around the back of the school to take a few photos. Tif suggested we go around to the side of the school where the kids were having recess. When we turned the corner you would have thought a celebrity had just arrived. All the sudden I hear excited screams of “Gary” & kids running from where ever they stood to come and great him. Within in seconds he was surrounded and being loved on from every angle. He just sat down and enjoyed the attention with a very content expression on his face. (see above). Tif explained to the kids what we were doing and how Gary was going to help change perceptions about pit bulls. To hear the kids talk about how much they loved Gary was just heartwarming and they wanted to get in on the fun. So a race was setup, the kids lined up and Gary was in the middle. He took no mercy on his competitors and beat them all each time with a full sprint. Still the kids yelled AGAIN! I took so many great photos with the kids & Gary, but since I don’t have photo releases for all the children I couldn’t post them here. This was such a pleasure to be able to witness this interaction with Gary and his kids. Learning more about how he was helping these kids and how she ties the discrimination again pit bulls into lessons for the kids about discrimination in general, it was all just amazing. She mentioned that after days at school, Gary is just completely exhausted and because of that doesn’t go every day. This sweet boy gives all of himself to help these kids and that is all you need to know about this dog. Not that he has a blocky head or muscled body or that people may judge him because of that appearance. All you need to know is that he gives with his heart 1000%.

Oh, and you may be wondering about his name. Well Tif allows her students to name her dogs. (even her dog Manly McQueen was named by her students), so Gary’s name comes from:

Gary from SpongeBob SquarePants & Fishlegs Ingerman from How to Train your Dragon

The race is on!!!

Jambo - 2/9/19

Name/Age: Jambo - 5 y/o

Family Members: Elizabeth, Taylor, Luke (Human Brother - 18) Animal Siblings: Raven- Lab Mix, Chloe - Chihuahua Mix, Simba - Mix Breed, Macy- Calico Cat, Punky- Black Cat.

How long has Jambo been in the family? 2 years

Profession: Mortgage Underwriter

Location: Decatur, GA.

Nicknames: Jammers, Bubba, Bubs, Jams

5 words/phrases that best describe Jambo?

  1. Goofy

  2. Playful

  3. Snuggly

  4. Sweet

  5. Sometimes psycho (LOL)

What makes Jambo unique? He cannot stand for things to be out of place. Everything has to be in its right place or he will bark at it. If you bring something in to the house and set it on the table he will bark at it, if something falls over he will bark at it, if you lay something on a piece of furniture that is not normally there he will bark at it. (See, sometimes psycho, LOL)

Jambo smile!

Rescue Story: So I have always followed Lifeline Animal Project and their adoption pages. We always wanted a pittie but already having 3 dogs (all saved from the shelter) we just couldn’t see bringing in a new dog.  Dogs would always jump out at me online but when I scrolled to this guy’s picture one day I just couldn’t let it go. My partner said “let’s get him”.  So the next day we went to the shelter for a visit.  We were told he came in as a stray and was very underweight. When she brought him out to us he really was just detached.  Didn’t care we were there and didn’t have much of a reaction at all. The lady at the shelter called him “a weird little guy” because he just wanted to be left alone. My partner and I said that no one would probably ever adopt him so we just couldn’t leave him there. He was thin, covered in scars and clearly never loved. When we brought him home everything scared him. If you picked up a toy to play with him he would cower and groan so it was obvious he was not well treated. He would cower at the slightest arm movements or if you moved toward him too fast. It took him months just to wag his tail and I’ll never forget the day he finally did.  We had gone out to run errands and when we came home he jumped up on me and I got the slightest of tail wagging and just broke out in tears.  We still get so excited when he wags his tail!  Now he’s a happy, thriving, tail wagging big ole love bug!!!

Home Forever Home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Going for walks and visiting pet friendly stores and other pet friendly locations.

What is life like since you rescued Jambo? I cannot imagine life without him. I’ve been able to show people that pittie type dogs do not have to be feared. They can be loved and they definitely can return the love no matter what they came from. He brings so much life and joy to us with his crazy antics!

Photographers note: I met up with Elizabeth & Jambo at a park not far from their home. If I am telling the truth I may have let out a little squeal when I got out of the car and saw little Jambo across the parking lot waiting with his Mom. He is just the cutest little low rider nugget, complete with his own bright blue bow tie. (I obviously love a dog in a bow tie). Jambo was a little unsure of the whole process at first and a little nervous. I gave him plenty of space during our time together and he was of course the most comfortable when his Mom was close by and touching him. The best part was when he decided he was done. He just basically said enough and went trotting back to his car, with Mom in pursuit. He went right to the drivers side of the car and waited for his Mom to catch up and let him in. Ok Jambo, I get the hint! :)

Diamond: Annoying (she really can be sometimes but it’s one thing that makes her, her)

Sable

Diamond

5 words/phrases that best describe Sable & Diamond?

Sable:

  1. Loyal

  2. Protector

  3. Escape Artist

  4. Kissing Bug

  5. The Mom Dog

Diamond:

  1. Ditsy

  2. She’s like a Sour Patch Kid

  3. Hyper

  4. Adorable

  5. Daddy’s Girl

What makes Sable & Diamond unique? Sable’s ability to change her environment. While Diamond has the ability to act off of people’s emotions. If I’m upset she seems upset. If I’m excited she gets excited. She is very intuitive of my emotions at least.

Sisters!

Rescue Story: Sable was owned by my sister and her husband. Please understand I had to tread lightly so I wouldn’t have my niece kept from me, considering I was raising her 90% of the time due to the abuse my sister was putting up with from her husband. I was keeping my niece safe the best way I knew how as a 17 year old.

Sable was kept in the back yard on a 3 foot chain and was rarely fed or watered unless it was done by me or my now husband who was my boyfriend at the time. We lived over an hour away so we were not able to be there every day. My sister and her husband got Sable for breeding purposes but she wouldn’t let a male near her so it’s like she wasn’t important anymore. The husband was extremely abusive to Sable. He would kick her, hit her, and after they got divorced I was told he took a welder to her metal chain and shocked her. My sister is not an animal person and had no business with a dog when she couldn’t even care for her child, so at that point I just took her. Didn’t even ask. I had enough and couldn’t believe I left Sable there like that. I had tons of guilt for that. She was animal aggressive all the time and only human aggressive if food was involved but I brought her home and she has been with us ever since.

Sable home & safe.

My husband & I went to a child’s birthday party and the house they had the party at belonged to the grandmother and uncle of the child. I stepped outside to smoke and my then boyfriend (now husband) came outside with me and this adorable little pit named Diamond was shaking she was so cold. (It was November and freezing that night) We would pet her a little and play but then join the party. Well Christopher (we call him C.J.) stepped back outside to play with her and she climbed up his leg using her back and paws, crawling inside his hoodie for warmth. The uncle told us we could have her because she wasn’t allowed inside (he didn’t know how to potty train a dog) and he would be gone for weeks traveling for work leaving her locked outside. So we brought her home and our journey began. We estimate she was about 4 or 5 months old when we got her.

Diamond Home & Warm!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We love to take Sable camping with us at the lake. She likes the attention she gets from the other campers and the water feels good on her belly! Diamond gets car sick so we don’t take her out much but at home she is obsessed with balls. We constantly are throwing a ball around.
What is life like since you rescued Sable & Diamond? Sable was a tough one. She wouldn’t let me near her when she eats and wouldn’t let any animal near her. (She ate an opossum one time in the yard) Summer and fall had past and I had been working with the aggression with food but at this time she was staying in the kennel and not in the house but was drastically improving. Then one night while I was at work (I worked nights at a factory at the time) my now husband sent me a picture of Sable laying in the kitchen floor. He said it was too cold outside for her now since winter was here. She didn’t tear up anything and didn’t make a single potty accident in the house. When I got home she went out to the yard, went potty and came back to the door. We were amazed. She wanted to be a house dog and wanted to please us. She has been an inside dog ever since. She still was animal aggressive;when someone handed me a 2-3 week old puppy they found outside in the middle of winter all by itself almost froze to death. I of course took the puppy home but was terrified of what Sable might do…she became a mom. She cleaned Syrus, cuddled her, and even helped me train her. She really did surprise us. We eventually got rid of the human aggression completely, that was our number 1 goal as responsible pet owners. We can now stick our hand in her mouth while she is trying to eat and she will stop what she is doing and be just calm. Animal aggression isn’t as bad but we still feed the dogs in their own corners. Sable hated Diamond when we first got her. Diamond wanted to play and Sable is a big couch potato. Sable attacked Diamond a few times to the point where we considered finding Diamond a new home but then Sable protected her from other dogs that were attacking Diamond in our front yard and it’s like she was staking her claim on Diamond as a member of her pack. We haven’t had any problems since. We take Sable out in public a lot now, it’s good practice and exposure that she never had. She loves festivals for all the attention and food she finds on the ground but as responsible dog owners we still have to be alert and cautious. With me holding the leash Sable feels the need to protect me and be on guard instead of relaxing and enjoying the people but when my husband holds the leash she will ignore other dogs and be a totally different dog. It’s like she knows her daddy will keep me and her safe. She is getting old and the realization that she may not be around much longer keeps me on my toes to spend most of my time with her. After all she is the vacuum for the kitchen floor when I cook and the pillow on my couch for my head. She is our pack leader and my oldest friend. I hope she is around for many more years.

Diamond was the hardest dog I’ve ever house trained. I know she has chewed over $2000 worth of stuff including furniture and clothing. (Once in a while I still catch her) She was very annoying for the 2 older dogs who are very laid back couch potatoes. Diamond is very athletic and constantly needs stimulation. She had to learn the rules of how the other two dogs worked. She and Sable especially had the hardest time but as I stated in Sable’s story on a Thanksgiving morning I let Diamond out to go potty and two stray dogs attacked her. We just got Diamond and she was still learning how to live in a home with other dogs. After Sable protected her Diamond still wouldn’t come near Sable for a few days but Diamond wouldn’t go potty outside without Sable anymore. That is what made their relationship work. Sable showed her she would protect her even if Diamond annoys the crap out of Sable. It really is like a teenage sister and little kid sister relationship. Diamond is 100% a daddy’s girl. When my husband comes home from work she shakes her tail so hard she throws her butt around. He is her best friend. I really didn’t connect with Diamond till she was about 2. I mean I was there and I would spend time with her but I never connected with her till around the time she started to calm down. I had to be the parent in the house since I was home all the time so sometimes I was the bad guy and she wouldn’t want to cuddle with me. Over the past year we have connected more. She now comes over and nudges my arm for petting and attention but still respects my boundaries….isn’t that funny. How a human and dog can develop a mutual respect relationship. I always joked that I would get rid of her if my husband ever passed away but to be honest. I actually do love her, even if she is the most annoying dog I’ve ever owned. Diamond also has this really weird obsession with her older sister Syrus. It’s really something I’ve never seen before. If Syrus goes somewhere (even the other room) without Diamond, when they are together again Diamond has to be all over Syrus to the point where sometimes I have to make her stop. (She is bigger than Syrus so she can hurt her). It’s one of those if Syrus passed away Diamond would never be the same. I like to hide Syrus in my lap under a blanket, Diamond goes insane looking for her. It’s so funny. After Diamond we decided no more dogs for now. Sable is getting too old and grumpy, Syrus is to clingy (that’s the spoiled momma’s girl) and Diamond just completed our pack by giving us the athletic, goofy, and yes annoying piece of sunshine we didn’t know we needed.

Photographers Note: Janna & CJ actually drove about an hour to meet me at Little Mulberry Park in Dacula, GA. Considering Diamond can get car sick, this really meant a lot that they did that to be part of this little project. After reading their stories I am so glad they did. Sable & Diamond might have been dogs that other people would have given up on but the fact that Janna & CJ brought these two in and gave them a secure, warm, safe, happy home and never gave up them, is what true responsible pet owner ship is all about.

At the park, the dogs were so excited with the new surroundings and all the new smells. It’s always another factor in these shoots if you meet up in a place where the dogs have never been, because it’s like party time for them. The last thing they want to do is cooperate for some woman with a camera. The more excited Diamond got the pinker she got, so the pink in her photos is really how pink she was, like a cute little piglet! Sable even tried to make friends with a Goose (maybe not friends exactly). There really was a lot of excitement but even with all of that, they actually did great. As we were walking back to the car, you could see all that excitement was starting to tire them a bit. Guessing they had a nice nap on the car ride home.

Carla - 2/2/19

Name/Age - Carla - 11 y/o

Family Members: Sarah, Jeremy (Boyfriend), & her late sister Sassy.

How long has Carla been in the family? Since 2010

Profession: Bartender/Student/Pet Sitter

Location: Smyrna, GA

Nicknames: Queezie, Queezer, Curler, Carla Queeza, Queez

5 words/phrases that best describe Carla?

  1. Loving

  2. Patient

  3. Perfection

  4. Social

  5. Loyal

What makes Carla unique? She is calming. I have seen super reactive dogs fall in love with her. She listens and understands situations like most people cannot.

Eskimo kiss to her favorite Hippo!

Rescue Story: I used to live in Buckhead and went out to all the bars in my early twenties. A bartender there used to have her. I met her and instantly loved her. I got her vetted and spayed, would find any excuse to be around her. I lost contact with this person and one day I got a call from his roommate saying I needed to adopt her. Low and behold her owner texted me saying he simply did not have time for her. It was a dream come true. Its heartbreaking how often owners give up dogs.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We like snacks & Grey’s Anatomy.

What is life like since you rescued Carla? She is my world; she has been there for all of my relationships, family losses, moves, the death of her sister. She brings such joy and happiness to me. She radiates positivity. She is the perfect dog. She understands me and teaches me to be more patient. She has been through many fosters and boarding dogs and has remained so happy. Words really can’t describe how much better she has made my life. I hope she feels the same way.

Photographers Note: I met Sarah & Carla at beautiful Whittier Mill Park on a pretty warm day in February. Carla was so sweet and well behaved. We found an amazing old brick structure for their family shot and then let her run in the open spaces, chasing after her favorite purple hippo toy. Now the new smells got the better of her and she started to get a little more focused on those then her hippo, but we were still able to make it work. I loved seeing this sweet senior girl so happy and carefree. Sounds like she brings that to her Mom every day.

Via - 1/27/19

Name/Age: Via - 1 y/o

Family Members: Briana, Benjamin & dog sister Heidi (Boxer/Mastiff Mix)

How long has Via been in the family? April 2018

Profession: Briana is a Realtor/Director of Operations. Ben is a musician and works in sales for a graphics/vinyl supplier.

Location: Kennesaw, GA.

Nicknames: Boo, Booty, Baby Baby, Velvet Hippo, Manatee, Baby Boo Boo Tee, Turkey, Turkey Lurkey, Lurkey or just Lurk.

5 words/phrases that best describe Via?

  1. Light of my life

  2. Sweet as pie

  3. Beautiful

  4. Gentle

  5. Best dog Ever

What makes Via unique? Via is so intelligent and always wants to please Ben and I. She is always so sweet and good! She is very outwardly affectionate. She is very intuitive and intelligent. I think this sums up most Pits, but I think a lot of Pit bull haters don’t realize Pits embody these traits. She is truly the best dog. We are so thankful she is ours! She is also a confident dog, but not overwhelming or an Alpha.

Via with the beautiful eyes!

Rescue Story: Ben was able to finesse a deal with our neighbors that are less than great and involved in a lot of illegal activities, to let us buy Via from them. Here is more of the back story with this transaction: She was given to Josh (Josh was Via’s 2nd owner) so he could breed her. (Steam is billowing out of my ears thinking about that!) More backstory—the person who gave Via to Josh had her tied to a mailbox post even as a baby puppy. Josh viewed her as a “cash cow”. Via had never been to the vet and didn’t have any shots, heartworm preventative meds, or flea meds. And obviously wasn’t going to get any medical help or vet attention during her pregnancies. Which makes me madder than hell—especially when I know the path that most Pits go on. She would have most likely be dropped off at a shelter after a few litters. In shelters the best dogs are a small fish in a big pond which is crushing to me to even think about. I digress. The first time I saw her I fell in love with her! I got home from work and Ben was like I need to show you something at Josh’s house. I thought Ben had literally hit his head at one point during the day to suggest this. Ben works from home so he saw Via when she was first brought to that house. So I begrudgingly walked down to their house. I thought to myself if this is the time that the cops come to bust this house and I am here I am going to get Ben big time! Secondly I thought how fast can I run in these six inch heels and mini dress. I knock on the door—there is a storm door and a solid door. The solid door opens and I see baby Via through the storm door! I screamed with excitement! It startled JD (a roommate of Josh’s) and Ben. It was an immediate connection. JD opened the door and next thing I knew I was laying on their front porch loving on this little slice of heaven. Ben should have known I wouldn’t let that go—especially thinking about her potential life or lack there of. The next day Josh brought her down to our house. Heidi, our Boxer/Mastiff loved her immediately too! I knew that she was meant to be ours! I nagged and wrung my hands over Via constantly. I told Josh you name a price I will go to the atm right now so we can adopt her from you. She was so skinny and not taken care of. He kept telling me, nah you crazy. I would respond, yea I am, but I get what I want! Days go on. I can’t stop thinking of Via. I would look at my spoiled Heidi and think that is what every dog’s life should be! I came home from work on a Friday. I was exhausted. I just want to sit on my front porch have a drink and do baby talk to Heidi, pet her, and throw her ball. Ben then tells me I have a surprise, but I will tell you at dinner. I am like Jesus take this wheel! I HATE surprises. I am so anxious the whole time at dinner that I can’t stop trying to figure out the surprise or what he has up his sleeve! Finally he tells me we are getting Via! Once again I scream! In the middle of a sushi restaurant! I was over the moon! I jumped up from the table told our server to cancel our meal—I will pay for everything but we have got to go—LOL! Josh was having truck issues and they are dirt floor poor even though they are involved with a lot of lucrative illegal activities. Since he was in need of money and they view me as “Wells Fargo” he struck up a deal with Ben. Ben agreed that we would pay Josh $500 in exchange Via. That $500 would fix his truck. Sounded like the best deal in history to me! The second I got my boo (Via) home I gave her a bath! She was so stinky! She just looked at me like thank you! Heidi was thrilled! She was smiling at me constantly and following Via around everywhere she went! Since it was in the evening I had to wait until morning to make her a vet visit. In the mean time I called my parents. My parents were over at my house in a matter of minutes and immediately were smitten with this little gray velvet manatee occupying my house. We went to the vet got her all fixed up and on the proper preventative meds! She was in great health! That was a blessing! Back to Josh. Ben did a “gentleman’s handshake” with Josh that we wouldn’t get Via spayed. When I heard that I was like well she is getting spayed and she is not getting bred—pretty much an over my dead body speech! So she is spayed now and visits the vet for her normal visits. Josh found out about her being spayed. He wasn’t thrilled—but I don’t care! I am focused on her health and her well being not him making money on selling puppies. This sums up me getting my Via! She has completed our family! She is such a great dog! She has brought Heidi out of her shell and has changed so many minds about Pits! Ben, Heidi, and I are over the moon with her! She is perfect!

Via safe and sound in her forever home.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? I love watching Via and Heidi playing in the yard. Via especially runs so fast—Heidi trots! She looks like a race horse! She loves it, and she smiles the whole time! Heidi loves chasing any type of ball—so I throw the tennis ball a lot! Heidi and Via love playing together especially with toys that can be destroyed! It has become a Saturday morning chore for me to purchase a new batch of toys for them. We go through a lot of toys, but it is totally worth it! They truly complete each other and brought Ben and I closer together. They are always together. They sleep together. They eat at the same times and love each other. They are both “sun goddesses”, so they often lay on the deck in the sun usually right beside each other. They look so peaceful! I love that! I also love laying in bed with Via snuggled up against me.

What is life like since you rescued Via? It’s perfect! Via has completed our family! She makes us laugh and smile constantly. It helps that she is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen—other than Heidi Pea of course! Heidi is also a happier dog!

Photographers Notes: This is a story that shows, there are all kinds of rescues. I shudder to think of the life that this beautiful girl would have had if Ben hadn’t stepped in and “made a deal” to bring Via into their home. Via is that beautiful Latte color, coffee with a lot of cream! Then she has those amazing light green eyes….just a completely beautiful dog. Then you add in her sweet personality; Briana and Ben hit the jack pot. What I love the most, is she has this grumpy expression, even when she is clearly not grumpy, that is just her expression…it’s adorable! To see her race around with her sister and play, it’s clear her 3rd home is her best & forever home! She is loved, safe and will never become someones “cash cow”. Instead along with her sister, she is the spoiled family pet she deserves to be!

Bronx - 1/26/19

Name/Age: Bronx - Almost 2 (April 2nd)

Family Members: Kayla & fur brother Oscar (4 years old)

How long has Bronx been in the family? I have had Bronx since he was 4 months old.

Profession: Hair Stylist

Location: Smyrna, GA.

Nicknames: Bronxy, Turd, Sweet Boy, Crazy Boy, Baby Boy

5 words/phrases that best describe Bronx?

  1. Sweet

  2. Cuddly

  3. Affectionate

  4. Goofy

  5. Gentle

What makes Bronx unique? He will climb up on the couch or bed with you just to cuddle because he wants to be loved and get loved. As well as he knows when he needs to be gentle. He will be acting all crazy jumping & playing with his brother but when he is around a kid it’s like he knows he needs to be careful. Sometimes I have to remind him but he’s just so sweet and loving.

Bronx is all Happy & Joy!

Rescue Story: : The day I took Bronx home is actually funny. My Mom & I were going grocery shopping at Walmart one Sunday. When we go to leave we see this truck and saw it had puppies. Usually I would want to go over there and see them but I didn’t want to because I knew I would go home with another dog; which I had two of my own at home already. My mom is the one who always tells me not to bring home any more animals, well she kept telling me Kayla stop. I was like fine but we can’t have any more animals. Well we stopped and there it was, my Bronx and his sister in the bed of the truck. I wanted so badly to take him home but I knew I already had two responsibilities at home; which two dogs is a lot for one person to handle alone. My mom was like c’mon he’s so cute and sweet. I personally didn’t want to just because I knew I would end up caring for him myself because my mom would get tired of everything that had to do with caring for animals. I gave in and said fine knowing he would be mine after a month. He was so precious and sweet but very scared at first. I fell in love immediately. Well when talking to the owners they were telling us how they had someone that was supposed to come back for him and my heart sank. I had already had the idea we were taking him home, so the owners had called the people that were supposed to show back up and no one answered; so they let us take him. They had told us that their dogs had had an accidental pregnancy before they were supposed to get nurtured and they had too many dogs at home, so if these didn’t go to a new home they’d go to the pound. That was a no brainer for me because I knew more than likely at some point in Bronx’s life he would end up at the shelter because someone would get tired of him or some other excuse. Here it is a year and a half later and I could not imagine my life without Bronx. He is the silliest boy, he likes to roll on his back and just freeze in the craziest positions with his mouth open and tongue out. He gets so excited he runs into walls (LOL), he’s okay he never gets hurt. He is also my baby literally he loves taking naps and even more so when he’s cuddled up to someone he has to always be touching you for the most part. Spend a day with him and you’d love him just as much as I do.

From the bed of a truck to his forever home.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? I just love when he climbs into my lap and literally lays his whole body on mine with his head on my chest and falls asleep. He looks like an angel, besides the fact that he snores and grunts like a grown man!

What is life like since you rescued Bronx? I honestly couldn’t imagine life without him. He brings so much joy and happiness to my life. I went a couple weeks without him and it made me depressed that I couldn’t have him with me at all times. He just has this thing about him that once you’ve met him he leaves a mark on you.

Photographers Note: The word I would use to describe Bronx is exuberant. Happiness & joy comes out of every inch of him. We met up at a nice big park and tried to find a spot that wasn’t too muddy for Bronx to run around. Well of course, the White Dog took no time at all in finding mud and pealing out in it, at the beginning of the shoot. We both laughed and went with it, I mean how often are our dogs pristinely clean anyway? There were so many new smells and new people around, including the lady sitting on the ground that he would come and visit with in between shots. When we did get his attention, just adorable and very photogenic. I have to agree with Kayla, I only spent about 40m with him and I loved him too, didn’t need the whole day with him to make that decision!

Lucy - 1/13/19

Name: Lucille Scarlet - 1.5 y/o

Family Members: Lucy has 2 cats, Cayenne and Isabel & 1 human, Susan

How long has Lucy been in the family? Gotcha day was July 29, 2017

Profession: Allstate Agent

Location: Woodstock, GA.

Nicknames: Lucy Lu

5 words/phrases that best describe Lucy?

  1. Sensitive

  2. Loving

  3. Playful

  4. Kind

  5. Smart

What makes Lucy unique? She is so sensitive, to her surroundings. She loves to watch kid’s and other animal’s on TV. I bought her a dog TV just because she enjoy’s it so much.

Run like the wind!

Rescue Story: I had two French Bulldogs for twelve years. I lost one in May of 2016 and the other in May of 2017. Two months later I went to the Atlanta Humane Society, on Mansell. I was coming back from looking at a wedding venue with my daughter and best friend. For no reason, I crossed 4 lanes of traffic on 400 North and zipped off the interstate and headed to the humane society. I was a mess after losing my dogs. We went in and I originally looked at the older dogs. I did not want a puppy. Every time I would walk by a particular concrete pen, a little dog would stand on the side and howl. This happened more than once until one of the workers said, “You know that is your dog calling you” ! I DO NOT WANT A PUPPY. Long story short, I had said a little prayer, to my Frenchies before walking in to the shelter. I asked them to pick the perfect dog for me. I tried to leave the shelter and got out the door when I could not find my friend. So, my daughter and I went back in and found her holding another puppy. I had to walk by Lucy’s pen again, and when I did, she started howling again. She had just turned eight weeks old. So, I lifted the scrawny little white dog up and put her in my lap. I was so over taken with emotion, I started to cry. Lucy looked up at me with her big green eye’s (mine are green, as well) and licked my tears. My daughter started filling out the paperwork. Little did I know, how sick she was. 2 days home and she was diagnosed with K-9 flu, kennel cough, bladder infection and pneumonia. She went back and forth to the vet for about 10 weeks, several cocktails of antibiotics, steroids and a home breathing machine. She finally pulled out of it and started to limp on her left leg. She had a bone that did not form proper marrow. Three trips to Blue Pearl Hospital, they did three different shock wave treatments and stem cell injections. She now does not limp. Lucy goes to work with me every day. She is like the Allstate greeter. She loves people, other animals and especially children. She get’s so upset, if she hears a child in distress. She is my girl.

“I Do not want a puppy”, guess Lucy had other plans!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? She loves playing with her friends. She has the worlds largest Great Dane (Guinness World book for 2019), a Pit- Frenchie mix and two French Bulldog/Boston buddies that she plays with. We are all one big happy family. Lucy hikes, loves to go out on the boat, she travels in my RV on vacation, to the beach. Let’s just say, if my dog isn’t welcome, neither am I. LOL

What is life like since you rescued Lucy? She rescued me. Without a doubt. She picked me. She is healing my heart. She is my best friend.

Photographers Note: I met up with Susan, Lucy & Susan’s daughter on a cold, foggy, drizzly day at Piedmont Park Which ended up being a great back drop for some fun photos. Lucy was just as sweet as could be and was super excited to be in a new spot with all the new smells. When Susan had shared with me how sick this poor girl had been after she adopted her, I was shocked. This happy healthy girl showed no signs of her past issues. She gleefully raced back and forth between her Mom and her human sister so I could capture some action shots. This girl definitely has a great life now and the best part is she was responsible for choosing it! Way to go Lucy!!

Hazel - 1/6/19

Name: Hazel - 5 y/o

Family Members: Michelle & Keyon

How long has Hazel been in the family? 5 years

Profession: Michelle: Dental Assistant Keyon: Disabled US Army Vet (in IT now)

Location: Kennesaw, GA

Nicknames: Hazel Pazel, Stinkbaer

5 words/phrases that best describe Hazel?

  1. Everybody’s Darling

  2. Laid back

  3. Sporty(she was called a tank by a 5 year old”Submarine”)

  4. Garbage disposal (eats whatever is available)

  5. Pretty Girl

What makes Hazel unique? She can sense when people are interested in her or when not. She’s the perfect introduction/ icebreaker for people that are not educated on pit bull type dogs.

Play time!

Rescue Story: We happened to look at the local animal control to adopt a dog. She wasn’t available at that time (5 days state hold wasn’t up) Came back on the weekend and the kennel was EMPTY. Luckily a volunteer mentioned that some dogs were taken to an offsite adoption. We went through 17 photos looking for her, she was #18. We headed over to the offsite location and in less then 10 mins she sealed the deal with her sweetness. She must have been someone’s dog before because she was semi housebroken. That’s all we know.

Hazel settling in to her forever home.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Every day is our favorite. moment. If I would have to decide on 1 moment id say when we took Hazel to see our 5 year old niece that was petrified of dogs (crying , screaming etc.) Hazel won her over, and now they are best buds (niece calls and ask to Facetime with Hazel).

What is life like since you rescued Hazel? She brightens even your darkest day. You may have had a long annoying day at work. Then you come home & Hazel greets you with excited wagging tail & bark, jumps up on you & licks you; how could you still be annoyed after that? YOU CANT!

Photographers Note: I am so thankful for flexible volunteers, due to all the rain Atlanta had been getting we had to reschedule our session several times. Course this also meant that it was a little wet in their backyard when we finally did get a nice day, but Hazel didn’t seem to mind. She would run around with her rope toy, happy as can be….and her beautiful coloring even blended in with the mix of red Georgia clay, so if she happened to get a little dirty no one would be the wiser. I sat down on their patio and just snapped away as she played. She would do a few laps and then come running back to me to check in. Moved in beside me for a quick pet, a little sniff and a smooch, then off she went again. This girl is just the sweetest, I can see how she is a fantastic ambassador for dogs like her.

Koda - 1/5/19

Profession: Melanie: licensed hairstylist and I also hostess at Revival Decatur Seamus: Restaurant Industry

Location: We live on a quiet dead end street in Scottdale, GA. We absolutely love that the area is so dog friendly!

5 words/phrases that best describe Koda?

  1. Full Body Wiggle

  2. Kissing Machine

  3. Doesn’t Bark A Lot (have only heard her bark once or twice)

  4. Goes Gonzo for Rawhides

  5. Never Met A stranger

  6. Stomps her paw and grumbles when she is pouting

What makes Koda unique? When hanging at home with her people, Koda figures “when in Rome” and sits like a human on the couch! LOL

Beautiful girl!

Rescue Story: I had been considering fostering a dog for a long time, and finally decided to go meet some pups at LifeLine Animal Project in Avondale. I met so many sweet dogs that day, but noticed one in particular that was so calm and quiet while everyone else was barking and twirling around. I went to her kennel and when I knelt down in front of her, Koda pressed the side of her face into the wire. I put my face up against hers and we just sat like that for a minute. Done. She’s my “foster fail” LOL. I don’t know why I thought I’d only be able to spend a few months with her. I’ve fallen in love and she’s not going anywhere!

I don’t have a ton of info about her history, other than she was an owner surrender. Someone loved her...she knows basic commands, some fun tricks, and had already been spayed and microchipped prior to her intake at the shelter. I hate that she had to be separated from her original family, but I am so grateful that I’ve met her and have the opportunity to give her a home and love on her for the rest of her life.

Hello Forever Family!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Koda loves wading in water, so we like to go to Avondale Lake and Sweetwater Creek. She’s got super sensitive skin, though, so these days always end with a foot bath. We bond while I use a washcloth to dry in between her toesies :p

What is life like since you rescued Koda? I love life with Koda!! There is so much laughter in my home since she’s joined us! She gives me something to look forward to! I love waking up with her face in mine, and can’t wait to get home from work to cuddle. I can only hope that I’m bringing her the same happiness and fullness. She seems happy :) And if you can measure a dog’s happiness in kisses, we’re doing ok LOL.

Photographers Note: This happy girl is just the most beautiful color. Photographs just don’t do it justice, almost the color of a beautiful mink coat (not real mink of course). At one point, Melanie was trying to get her to lay down and that resulted in her mastered roll over trick, all in one motion. As if to say, oh I can do more then lay down lady, just you watch! It was comical because she did it more then once. Such a show off! :) It’s never easy to learn that your new family member was a surrender from another family, you wonder what happened, why did they have to get ride of her. Especially when i clear they loved her and trained her. All you can do is look forward and know she will live out her life with her new forever family and there is unlimited love and happiness there.

Bradford - 12/29/18

Name: Bradford - 7.5 y/o

Family Members: Amanda & Ellie (8.5 year old Rottweiler mix )

How long has Bradford been in the family? 4 years! Adopted October, 2014

Profession: Marketing Manager, Atlanta Humane Society

Location: Decatur, GA.

Nicknames: B, B-bug, Bug

5 words/phrases that best describe Bradford?

  1. Faithful Friend

  2. Cuddle Extraordinaire

  3. Social Butterfly

  4. Emotionally Intelligent

  5. Mischievous

What makes Bradford unique? He really seems to be in tune with the emotional environment around him. He always seems to know exactly what you want from him even without a command being given. At both my current and previous workplace, he was everyone’s favorite office dog. He makes everyone’s day because he’s always stoked to see all his friends and leans against them for proper petting.

Cuteness with a side of spaghetti & meatballs!

Rescue Story: I was a volunteer at a shelter in Chattanooga, TN when I bought a house and decided that I should begin fostering. I walked through the shelter to pick a pup for foster, and saw B. He was looking at me over his shoulder leaned against the kennel door, and I began to pet his velvety chest. He just laid there and let me rub him- leaning harder on me as time went on. I found out that he was considered an “at risk” dog because he had been adopted and returned a few times, and he was terribly fearful of men.

I took him home later that week, and he instantly became my best friend. He bonded with me extremely quickly and began to trust the men around me as well. We worked on his anxieties for several months while he was still my foster dog, and then the day came… B had a potential adopter. As soon as I was faced with the reality that I might have to give him up, I knew I couldn’t. I went to the shelter the very next day and completed the adoption.

Soon after, I left my corporate management job and took a position with the shelter that brought B and I together. Now four years later, I’m still working in Animal Welfare and B is still my best friend. He’s a great dad/mentor to all the foster pups I bring home, and he helps them gain confidence and learn how to “dog”. Recently, he was diagnosed with cancer (MCT) and underwent surgery and radiation- he’s now cancer free!

When Bradford met his forever Mom!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Because of Bradford’s previous knee injury, we spend a lot of time on the couch watching TV together. He loves coming to work with me and spreading happiness throughout the office, and going out to eat at dog-friendly restaurants where his begging is often rewarded with yummy snacks.

What is life like since you rescued Bradford? B gives me a sense of belonging and family that I didn’t have before I rescued him. He is my best friend, and I think I’m his too 😊 I moved to Atlanta by myself, and he’s been a constant source of companionship, friendship, and love since the day I brought him home.

Photographers Notes: I met up with Amanda and Bradford in a park near their house. Since Atlanta had been having all kinds of rain, it of course was pretty wet and Bradford made quick time in getting his under belly pretty muddy! Upon meeting them Amanda mentioned that Bradford really likes to get dressed up and she had brought a long some of his favorite outfits. So in true model fashion we had some wardrobe changes during the shoot! Bradford is just the sweetest boy and I immediately got to experience his lean in move while I was petting him! Amanda mentioned that because Bradford is such a good poser, he is often used as a model for her at work as well. So clearly this beautiful boy knows how to work his good looks!

Roxanne & Rosie - 12/29/18

Name: Roxanne the Ham (2.5 y/o) & Rosie Posie (4-ish y/o)

Family Members: Denise & Toye (boyfriend)

How long has Rosie & Roxanne been in the family? Roxanne has been in the family 2 years & Rosie for 5 months.

Professions: Denise – Registered Nurse , Toye – Server at The EARL

Location: East Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames:

Roxanne: Foxy Roxy, Typewriter Taps

Rosie: Rosie Hoppin Floppin Ploppin Posie

Roxanne

Rosie

5 words/phrases that best describe Roxanne & Rosie?

Roxanne:

  1. A bat out of hell

  2. A Cartoon Character

  3. Hilarious

  4. Over dramatic

  5. Intuitive/Empathetic

Rosie:

  1. Sweet

  2. Adorable

  3. An Angel

  4. Calm

  5. A big ball of love

What makes Roxanne & Rosie unique? Roxanne the Ham: Even though she’s wild, she can sense when you’re not feeling good, physically or mentally, and will not leave your side and protect you. When Roxanne was a puppy, she would purposely knock her full bowl of water over or drag it across the floor. At the time, it was annoying and we are glad she grew out of that weird quirk.

Rosie Posie: She is an angel sent from heaven. She exudes love. She is the sweetest dog I have ever met and I am a credible source when I make that statement because I have been around hundreds of dogs in my time volunteering at DCAS.

Roxanne with the pouty lip!

Rosie on the move!

Sister play time!

Rescue Story: : Toye adopted Roxanne from DeKalb County Animal Services (DCAS) in August 2016. She was about 5 months old and was found as a stray by herself.

I volunteer at DCAS and intended for Rosie to just stay with us for the weekend, so she could get a short break from the shelter. Then the weekend turned into a week. Then we said we would foster her until she found a furever home. Then I stopped posting her on social media as adoptable and took down my old posts of her. I signed her adoption papers last month. She was found as a stray in January 2018. She came home with me on June 9th, 2018.

Roxanne’s first day in her forever home!

Rosie’s intake photo.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? There’s a school down the street from us that is only used as a set for TV or movies. There’s a huge soccer field behind it. We take the pups up there and watching them run their hearts out and play nonstop is the best. Also, simply cuddling with them on the couch and running down the hallway and jumping in bed with them is funny.

What is life like since you rescued Roxanne & Rosie? Roxanne the Ham is pure entertainment. Her antics are so silly, and she boggles our minds with what goes through that head of hers. Then we got Rosie Posie and they instantly became best friends. Rosie is the puzzle piece that we never knew was missing. She makes our little family complete. Her calm sweet demeanor is the yin to Roxanne’s fiery party animal yang. I can’t imagine what life would be like without them. I know that it would be extremely boring and there would be a lot less smiles and laughs. They bring so much happiness and joy to our lives.

Photographers Note: I met with up with Denise and the girls at the soccer field she mentions above. Of course here in Atlanta it had been raining for what seemed like forever and this was our first sunny weekend day in some time. You can probably guess what that meant for the field….yep pretty soggy. Not a problem from Roxanne with her black coat, but Rosie’s under carriage got pretty muddy pretty fast. Of course they didn’t care, they just raced around this huge field and had a blast, running back to check in with Denise and I every once and awhile. Capturing dogs at a full sprint can be challenging but when it works out, the look of joy on their faces is priceless. As we ended our time together, they walked me back to the car and as Denise was walking away with the girls, they both kept looking back at me and stopping; as if they wanted me to come with them. Just the sweetest girls and I had a blast with them too! :)

Happy Girl!

Ball Girl Dani!

Sisters!

Rescue Story: In the beginning of 2011 I started volunteering with a rescue, Angels Among Us (AAU), I transported pups, handled dogs at events, picked up rescue dogs that hadn’t found a foster home yet that were stuck in boarding, transported and handled them at adoption events. Bella was one of the first boarding babies i took to events, and I took her to A LOT of events. She was in boarding when I first started volunteering. Broke my heart every time, she got no attention & I never could understand why. At this time I hadn’t started fostering yet, so I wanted to help in every other way I could. Her name with the rescue was Bella Boop. She had the absolute best temperament, they would use her to test all the new boarding babies. Several months after our first adoption event together, the boarding facility/groom shop owners were going out of town and were having staff take care of all the dogs. I offered to dog sit her! My heart girl, Golden Retriever Mama Luckie, had passed away almost 2 years prior at 12 years old, we still had our little dogs and our first pit bull, the reason I got in to rescue, Romo. I hadn’t been ready to get another girl yet. Bella Star stayed with us for 5 days. She fit in like she had always been there. She and Romo became the best of friends so fast. I remember telling my hubby on the last day, that she reminded me of Mama Luckie. We had discussed fostering a little bit. He told me I can either start fostering, or we can adopt Bella Boop!!! It took less than a second to make the decision. She had been stuck in a kennel in boarding for over a year at this point!!!! Not anymore!!! She was always meant to be my girl! I wanted to change her name, as all my babies have Dallas Cowboys names LOL, but wanted to keep part of her rescue name. So Bella Boop became Bella Star. My girl that was surrendered to the Cherokee shelter at 11 months old, stuck in boarding for over a year, was then and forever will be my Star. She stayed by my side, my hubby’s side, and most importantly by Romo’s side for her first 2 months with us. After 5 vets, our Romo was diagnosed with cancer and MRSA at 4 years old, we lost him 2 days before Christmas. I made a promise, my pittie’s promise, as he left this world that me and Bella Star would do everything we could to help those like him. She’s helped me for over 4 years hold pit bull walks/ strolls, and help me foster many many pitties and pittie puppies. She’s the best big foster sis ever!!!!

Bella Star in the shelter.

Rescue Story cont….Last August (‘17), 107 dogs were found chained, abused, neglected, and with obvious signs of malnourishment. One of the rescues I foster for asked if I could take on a really difficult case from the 107. I had a foster puppy at the time and told them as soon as she’s adopted, I'll take her. They felt I would be the best foster home for her so they kept her at the boarding; a month later I brought her home. Re-named her Dani, after hubby and a Cowboys player.. To say she was the most emotionally broken and damaged dog or foster I've ever had is an understatement. She was only 5 months old when they found her on a chain bigger than her puppy head and weighed more than her super skinny body. The next 10 months we took our time with her, a lot of patience, understanding, more patience, love, lots of love and praise. On Aug 30th was our 10th anniversary. I had realized shortly before that I couldn't let her go. She had come so far with us, yet still so far to go. I felt if she went anywhere else she would regress, she would feel abandoned by us. I told hubby all this and he kept saying no, no, no, and again, if he even was gonna consider it, no more fostering. At our big fancy anniversary dinner date out together, we exchanged gifts and I opened mine, a small box with a necklace with a dog tag that said Dani Genson. My heart and soul melted and I cried. Our girl was never going to hurt or feel unloved again. Forgot to mention, me and my girl went to Polk County Court House for the sentencing of her monster, he got 30 years to serve 15!!!!!! My girl was on the news; Victoria Stillwell interviewed her, and one of her biggest fans in Kaitlyn Ross of 11 alive ❤

Rescued!

Dani at the sentencing of her abuser!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Bella loves to play ball & Frisbee. For Dani, Bella Star taught her to love playing ball. Her favorite part is getting to a ball first, keeping it in her mouth, running with Bella Star after the next one. She's so fast, she gets the next one, keeps it in her mouth with the first ball, and yep, a third one!

What is life like since you rescued Bella Star & Dani? Bella’s my best friend. She knows how very much we love her. We will and have done anything and everything for her. She’s a 2 time cancer survivor, and her brother Emmitt is a 1 time cancer survivor. My life wouldn’t be the same without her.

With Dani we've gone through so much together since day 1. Still now we help get her through her issues, noises, movements, she cowers. I have to put a 20 foot lead on her when we go in the backyard; at least 3 or 4 times a week she will run any time you go near her. She's made me stronger and has not only helped me learn better how to handle babies like her, shes become buddies with all our foster puppies, and she absolutely loves Bella Star. It was Bella Star who got Dani through the first several months we fostered, she watched everything Bella Star did, and me and Bella Star's interactions, that's how she learned how to be a normal dog, hell, just how to be a dog. She has our hearts.

Photographers Note: I have known Lynda for a couple years, as she is the coordinator for our monthly Pit Bull walks here in the Atlanta area. I can’t even count the # of foster dogs that have gone through her house since I have known her. She and Bella Star have definitely kept that pittie promise they made to Romo.

I know I have said this before but there is nothing more rewarding when a shy dog warms up to you in a short period of time. Bella Star was just as sweet as she could be and would come to me while I sat on the floor and give me kisses. Sure enough, Dani watched her closely on how she was handling this new person. Dani would run up to me while I was on the floor and get close then run away. She did this several times and eventually her retreat wasn’t as quick. I would put a hand out and she would let me touch her for only a minute. I can happily say after about 40m, I was getting some kisses from Dani too! It really was the best feeling. I think you can even tell from the photos that she was much more relaxed as time went on. (bow tie shot was taken first, which is pretty obvious, she was not thrilled) I can’t wait to see how Dani continues to flourish in her forever home, with the loving paw of her sister Bella Star showing her the ropes!

Tuck - 12/15/18

Name: Tuck - approx. 5-6 y/o

Family Members: Bailey (dog), Grant & Carolina (parents)

How long has Tuck been in the family? 2.5 years

Professions: Carolina: Engineer Grant: Law Student & Army Reserves

Location: Decatur, GA.

Nicknames: Tuckie, Porkie, Rum ham, Porkchop, Bubba, Potato boy

5 words/phrases that best describe Tuck?

  1. Snuggly

  2. Sweet

  3. Lovable

  4. Affectionate

  5. Silly

What makes Tuck unique? He loves humans and attention. Anytime anyone pets Bailey(our other dog) he likes to stick his head between your hand and Bailey so you can pet him instead.

Treats?

Rescue Story: I was volunteering at a shelter in Austin, TX and they had a program to bring dogs on sleepovers to your home. Tuck was so sweet, I knew I had to bring him home to give him a break-- I did this a few times. Grant was deployed at the time, so as soon as he got back from Korea I took him to the shelter to meet Tuck (seriously, the day after he landed back). We began fostering him shortly after that and eventually he got adopted. We were very sad when a family adopted him but knew he would have a happy life. A month later, they returned him because he was not a good fit for them. We were happy to continue to foster him and shortly after decided we did not want to let him go again and decided to adopt him ourselves.

Tuck at the shelter.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We love to just cuddle with him on the couch while we watch TV. It's also funny to see him try to out sniff our hound, she's got quite the nose and he's not as good as she is at sniffing for treats.

What is life like since you rescued Tuck? Our life is great! He complements our other dog so well since they are so different. He's a lot more cuddly and needy while Bailey is a lot more independent but a lot of fun on trails/outdoors.

Photographers Note: First of all, when I arrived at their home I thought I had the wrong house. I rang the bell and not a single bark. Grant opened the door and sure enough there were Tuck and Bailey wagging their tails in greeting. These two are the quietest pair. All they wanted to do was bump me with their noses and get attention.

Now Tuck, this pup is a photographers dream…first he is super chill and relaxed. He holds his poses so well when treats are present. Then with all that he has that adorable face with the perfect black and white markings. We tried to get him to do some active things like catch his favorite toy in the air, which he did a handful of times. Unfortunately that didn’t work out so well and he was pretty much over it at that point. No matter, seeing that handsome boy hold a pose through my view finder was perfection! I may have told Carolina I wanted to blow up one of the shots and hang it in my own home. : )

Photo I was referring to below:

Sophie Grace - 11/17/18

Name: Sophie Grace - 3.5 y/o

Family Members: Meghan & Brandon, Sophie’s big sisters (kitties): Chloe & Mae

How long has Sophie Grace been in the family? Adopted February 2015, she was 7 weeks old

Professions: Brandon: Software Engineer

Meghan: Workers’ Compensation Claims Administrator

Location: Peachtree Corners, GA.

Nicknames: Soph, Gracie Girl, Baby, Muffin-Butt, Love-bug, Seat Stealer, Princess Dog

5 words/phrases that best describe Sophie Grace?

  1. Lovable

  2. Happy

  3. Sweet

  4. Beautiful

  5. Seat Stealer

What makes Sophie Grace unique? Sophie knows how to give hugs to humans. If you ask her for a ‘puppy hug’ she will put her paws on your shoulders/neck and put her head down for a hug. It’s adorable!!

Play time!!!

Rescue Story: Sophie came into our lives from a Fulton County Animal Shelter adoption event at PetSmart. Her fur-mommy had been rescued very pregnant with her litter mates and were swept away to a loving foster home where Sophie was born and raised until she was about 7 weeks old. Her birth date is 12/21/2014. Luckily, her first Christmas was spent snuggled up with her fur-mommy and litter mates warm, fed, loved and dry. She was one of the fortunate ones that has not and will not ever know the cold reality of an animal shelter.

On the day we adopted her, it started as a quick trip to PetSmart to grab cat litter and cat food. She was one of just a couple pups left from her litter. She was the cutest puppy you have ever seen!! Her beautiful blue eyes looked up to you longingly to be snuggled. We snuggled her and loved on her for a few minutes and laughed about adopting her. We put her back in with her remaining brother and did our shopping. To our surprise, she was still there when we came out. Mommy held her one more time and that was it. She was coming home to be a Benjamin!!

Little tiny puppy, Sophie Grace!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? One of our favorite past times with our dog is sleeping in, especially when it’s cold outside. Sophie will stay under the covers right in the middle of us snuggling and keeping us warm until we decide to get up. There is no better life than the one we have with her!!

What is life like since you rescued Sophie Grace? For us: life is more family like. We adopted her as a baby and treated her like one. She brings us so much joy and happiness and life just would not be the same without her.

For her: life has been full of adventure and learning. She gets to travel and meet new people. She gets to play and run and enjoy being the amazing happy pibble that she is.

Photographers Note: Met with Brandon, Meghan and Sophie at Piedmont Park on a pretty day. Sophie was so excited to be there and smell all the new smells. When her parents would throw her ball and sticks for her, she repeatedly ran back off to the side of where they and I were, as if to say….lady with the camera you need to work a little harder to capture me! No worries, there were still plenty of opportunities to capture her beautiful face, with those amazing light blue eyes and her unique coloring. She really was just the sweetest (I know I say that about all of our volunteers, but that should tell you something about these amazing dogs)!

Dempsey- 11/11/18

Name: Dempsey - approx. 9 y/o

Family Member: Rosemary

How long has Dempsey been in the family? 6 1/2 years

Profession: Production Tech for Medical Device Company (Alcon)

Location: Milton, GA.

Nicknames: Demps, Dempster, Chunky Monkey

5 words/phrases that best describe Dempsey?

  1. Anxious

  2. Hungry

  3. Drooler

  4. Line of Sight

  5. Car Rides Rock

What makes Dempsey unique? He’s a survivor. He clearly had injuries prior to coming to me and has the scars/xrays to show. Demps appears more Lab than pittie, so most people don’t even realize that he’s a danger to society (wink)

Run Demps Run!

Rescue Story: Dempsey was pulled from a shelter in Cobb County (after being dumped by owner) by Atlanta Dog Squad in 2012. My niece was volunteering there and was asked (in early 2013) to take him in for a weekend while the foster mom went out of town. She brought him over to my parent’s house and told me his brief story. I had just lost my job so, of course, it was a great time to adopt a dog! I didn’t know what the hell I was doing but so glad I took the leap.

Settling in to his forever home quickly

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Well it’s a pretty boring life we lead. Demps does not like other dogs or any animal, so daily walks are quite the adventure. After speaking to a few trainers, I realized that I had to change my attitude and behavior as he was going to feed off my reactions. Some days are ruff some not so bad…the point is we live pretty isolated because of his anxiety being around other animals. He loves people though and as long as he has me in his line of sight (including showers), has food and car rides….it’s a good life.

What is life like since you rescued Dempsey? Well, he’s in heaven. He’s a bit spoiled and I think he’s grateful to have someone that tolerates his being. I’m the one who has been changed. He is my life and he has opened my eyes to the horrors so many bully breeds have endured and continue to endure. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that there are good people out there who are leading a revolution to bring awareness of these beautiful, docile breeds while bringing to the light the continued horrors that humans inflict on these dogs and, really, all animals. The misperception and ignorance must change as well as the laws.

Photographers Notes: So many things for me to comment on related to this lovely little family. First of all, Rosemary actually found Shine A Light via a post the Stand up for Pits Foundation shared (they are based in CA, for those who don’t know that). I absolutely loved that she found us this way. We also were both decked out in our Stand up For Pits gear (for those familiar with the org, I was Team Sally and she was Team Todd- photo on our Instagram account) and talked about all the same organizations and dogs that we follow on Instagram! She is a kindred spirit in the changing of perceptions about these amazing dogs.

Now to sweet and adorable Dempsey. Rosemary had us meet up at a friends horse farm, which was just perfect. It was wooded and had plenty of room for Dempsey to run around. In fact, Rose mentioned this was really the first time she had seen him really be able to run freely. He was in heaven. When you look at Dempsey, you definitely see a lot of lab but his labby head is on this short squatty body that is built like a bully breed. Watching him with his adorable MOM sweater on and that happy smile (photo evidence above) was just cuteness overload. Then to top it off, when he would come over to me for a check in, his fur is like petting a rabbit. Sooo incredibly soft! We even had an audience for the shoot, two donkey’s and a horse!

Lucille - 11/10/18

Name: Lucille

Family Member: Gwenieth

How long has Lucille been in the family? Since April 2012

Profession: Partner, Commercial Lease Management

Location: Dunwoody, GA.

Nicknames: Lucy, Lucy Lu, Lulu, Luly, Boo

5 words/phrases that best describe Lucy?

  1. Goofy/Silly

  2. Affectionate/Loving

  3. Very Intelligent

  4. Playful/fun/Comical/Hilarious

  5. Insightful

What makes Lucy unique? She has learned certain phrases such as “Do you think you need to clean up your toys?” She snatches up her toy and runs away with it. Or if I am eating something in the living room, I will say “Do you think you need to go to the kitchen?” She will run into the kitchen and just sit there patiently waiting for me to come into the kitchen to give her the leftovers! It is hilarious! She also will growl at me when I don’t pay attention to her and will slap me with her paw!

Such a pretty smile!

Rescue Story: Lucy was pulled from the Macon, GA dog shelter by a rescuer named Hailey as she was about to be euthanized – first heart tug. Although still mourning the loss of my Eddy (my first rescue), I agreed to meet her. I drove to Jackson, GA to Hailey’s house and when I drove up I saw this silly black dog with white markings (2nd heart tug as Eddy was black with white markings) romping around in the background with a gimp leg. Okay…no one said anything about a gimp leg…another heart string just pinged! We met and I felt an instant attraction to her but something after meeting her begged the question about her being a “lab mix”. I could see that she had pit bull/terrier in her. Her yawn gave it away along with her muscled body. I told Hailey I would think about everything and drove away. I called Hailey on the way home, it was a 2 hour drive so I had time to think and said I was apprehensive because of her having pit bull/terrier in her and because of all of the horror stories you hear about these “types” of dogs. I WAS A DISCRIMINATOR. Hailey understood and asked me to just do some research on her before I made a final decision. I said I would. What I found was alarming. Alarming because this type of information should make the headlines about how great these dogs are and not the horror shows that do. I read about their love and devotion to their owners, their intelligence, train-ability, about the bad rap they are given and on and on. She stayed on my mind. I called Hailey back and said I would take her. That has become one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I love her to the ends of the earth and would not give her up for anything. I wish everyone would take the time to really understand these dogs as they are quite spectacular. Oh…and the gimp leg? Suddenly seemed fine after I took her home and the vet could not find anything wrong! I wonder…

Lucy in her forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? I work from home so we are bonded at the hip every day. Our best times are our early morning walks. She deciphers all of the smells of the earth while I meditate and gather my thoughts.

What is life like since you rescued Lucy? Lucy rescued me. The year I got her I experienced many deaths, first my dog Eddy, then my Dad, then my relationship with a man I thought I was going to marry, then the worse was my nephew who died very tragically. This all happened in an 8 and a half month span. Had it not been for Lucy, I am not sure I would have made it. She was my heartbeat. She forced me to get out of bed and move. I knew that she needed me everyday to feed her, take her out, walk her but she had no idea just how much I needed her needing me. I will be forever indebted to her for rescuing me.

Photographers Note: I met up with Gwen & Lucy on a pretty brisk morning which meant that Lucy was full of energy and frankly just a hoot. All of her antics had me laughing nearly the whole time. When I laid down on my stomach in front of her to get some shots of her, she just wanted to hold my hand. She belly crawled closer and then would smack my hand with her paw. This seems to be a move she is known for. Then as we were finishing up, I noticed a small tail hanging out of her mouth, she had captured a gecko. When I said something to Gwen, it escaped (or she dropped it) and then the search for her new friend began. She just buried herself in the monkey grass and searched, other then a few rolls in the grass, she was determined, until Gwen had to pull her away! (bummer Mom!)

With this story, here we are with another person who took the time to educate herself and see Lucy for the dog she is, no other label needed. Education is key and when trying to change perceptions, suggesting people do some research is a great place to start. Of course sending them to this website, is a great way for them to add to that education! :)

Nina & Izzy - 11/4/18

Name: Nina (7 y/o) & Izzy (4 y/o)

Family Members: James & Sunny

How long have Nina & Izzy been in the family? Nina has been in the family for 3 years and Izzy 1.5 years.

Professions: James - Sales Manager, Sunny- Attorney

Location: Decatur, GA.

Nicknames:

Nina: Neens, Neensy-poo

Izzy: Izz, Bizzy, Bizz-Boo

Nina

Izzy

5 words/phrases that best describe Nina & Izzy?

Nina:

  1. Smart

  2. Stubborn

  3. Serious

  4. Snuggly

  5. Playful

Izzy:

  1. Happy

  2. Content

  3. Gentle

  4. Goofy

  5. Instinctual

What makes Nina & Izzy unique? Nina knows that I like to straighten up the bedding/covers each night before getting into bed, and she sits on the floor and waits for me to finish before jumping up. I never taught her to do that…

For Izzy it’s her yodel/howl/screeching sounds when she gets excited (i.e. every morning before her walk).

It’s play time for Nina!

Izzy taking a little play break.

Sisters!!!

Rescue Story: We were at the Virginia-Highland Summerfest with James’ parents after eating brunch at American Roadhouse (now closed). I was walking next to James’ mom and mentioning how we were thinking of adopting a dog soon. About 30 seconds later, we serendipitously walked by the Ace Hardware on N. Highland, where Lifeline had several dogs available for adoption. We were looking at each of the dogs, but Nina almost immediately drew James in. We put in an application for Nina right then, and we picked her up a few days later.

According to Lifeline, Nina was her name before we adopted her, so we kept it. Nina was adopted out of Lifeline as a puppy, and one of the employees dog sat Nina on a few occasions when the owner was away. At some point, this same employee saw Nina roaming around off of Memorial Drive and was able to get Nina to come to him and get her off of the street. The employee then took her into Lifeline instead of back to the owner, but the employee did not give us specific details as to why—but we got the idea. When we first got Nina home, she was VERY excited, running all over the place. She would get scared if you raised your hand or made sudden movements around her, crouching down as if we were about to hit her. Based on that and some other behaviors that she has since outgrown, we imagine that she did not get adequate care at her prior home. You now would never know that Nina had anything other than a loving past—she has completely abandoned those behaviors and thinks she runs the house. She gained about 10 pounds of muscle and now is a very athletic, alert dog.

Freedom Ride for sweet Nina!

Freedom Ride for sweet Nina!

Rescue Story cont….- We bought a house with a backyard and felt like Nina would benefit by having another dog around so that she wasn’t alone all day. A few months after we move in and were settled, we contacted Lifeline about adopting a second dog. I wrote a very detailed list of Nina’s traits (including that she doesn’t like to “lose” at playing), and Lifeline picked out three potential matches. We took Nina to Lifeline to meet the matches, and the first one was a bust—they hated each other. Lifeline let us meet Izzy second. They took us to one of their outdoor pens, and the dogs met. Nina could not have given two hoots about Izzy because she was so submissive, that Nina found her boring. To be fair, we still joke that Izzy was a “fainting goat” when we got her—she rolled over immediately at anyone and anything. We took Izzy home with us for a trial run, and Izzy never went back to Lifeline.

Izzy was picked up off the streets as a puppy, and Dekalb Animal Control first housed her with several other dogs. Izzy got picked on by the other dogs and they beat up on her a few times, so Lifeline got involved so that Izzy could have her own pen. Izzy had been at the shelter for most of her life, and you could tell. It took her a little while to warm up to us, but she fell in love with Nina immediately (we can’t say Nina felt the same way…). To this day, we are certain that Izzy loves Nina so much more than us—Nina brought Izzy out of her shell and taught her how to “dog.” We had some challenges, as Izzy is not the brightest crayon in the box, but Izzy now has hit her stride.

We couldn’t take Izzy on long walks for a while, as she was not strong enough and would tire very quickly. Izzy’s back knees both are turned in towards her belly, so she had to figure out how to go up stairs, jump on the couch, etc. as well. She now has gotten a lot stronger and runs/plays with Nina without any issues (her knees are still the same, she just knows how to use her body better).

Izzy’s Shelter glamour shot!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Hiking at Arabia Mountain in Lithonia. We take the dogs most every weekend. Izzy always liked walking in the water, but she has since learned that she can plop down, too, which brings her great joy. Nina always has hated water, but she now gets deeper into the water and more frequently wets her paws – which we think is in part due to Izzy’s enjoyment of water.

What is life like since you rescued Nina & Izzy? Great! Nina is always excited to see you come home and gives great snuggles (when she wants them). Nina feels much more confident and certainly shows it!

Izzy is SUCH a happy dog - you can just look at her and she will start wagging her tail. Her happiness is contagious because she just never ceases to get excited about any and everything. We definitely think that Nina is happier to have a buddy, even if she doesn’t always act like it when we’re home, and Izzy is happy to have a real home.

Photographers Note: Awhile back I was sitting in my front yard planting flowers and Sunny, James & Nina walked by. I commented on how cute Nina was and they all stopped to chat with me. Nina came over and gave me some love, so I took the opportunity to tell them about this project. That was probably over a year ago and this October Sunny reached out to me to volunteer. Many changes in their lives, they had moved, gotten married and added adorable Izzy to their family. I often approach people when I am out and about if they are with their dog that would fit the “pit bull type” dog profile. Sometimes I have my cards to give them, other times it’s just word of mouth but either way I rarely have them follow up to volunteer. I was so surprised and happy that this time it worked and we have these two great dogs stories to share because of that encounter.

I will also add, these two pups have an enormous backyard to romp and play in, it was perfect for the shoot. I was also very pleased with the number of times they both would come over and check on me; give me kisses and sniff around. As if to say, “not sure why you are sitting on the ground but we wanted to be sure you are ok, just checking in.” Just so sweet and a fantastic perk of the project…..PIBBLE KISSES!!!

Sampson - 10/21/18

Name: Sampson - 5-ish y/o

Family Members: Heather, Matt, Jet (son) - 6 y/o, & Mia (kitty)- 10 y/o

How long has Sampson been in the family? Sampson officially joined us in March - 2018 (a much awaited present for(Heather’s birthday!)

Profession: Heather: Chief Marketing Officer, LifeLine Animal Project

Matt: Digital Analytics Consultant, CNN/Turner Broadcasting

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: Samps, Goober, Goobs

5 words/phrases that best describe Sampson?

  1. Handsome

  2. Gentle

  3. Soulful

  4. Incredibly food & treat motivated

  5. Alternates between looking absolutely “pitty”ful (when waiting for food) and absolutely adorable

What makes Sampson unique? Every night around 7:30, our old man tucks himself into bed. He walks into his crate, spins around a few times, adjusts his bed, blanket; then curls up & goes to bed (& he SNORES – so does the cat and hubby so it’s quite the choir at night.)

Regal + Drool = Adorable

Rescue Story: Sampson was found by a pizza delivery person in Oakhurst. He was in really bad shape with cuts on his face and protruding ribs and spine, but in good spirits. A neighbor took him in and quickly posted his adorable mug on NextDoor before taking him to the DeKalb County Animal shelter. A dear friend of mine saw his post and quickly decided to foster him. She spoiled him with kindness and love to make up for all the hard times he must have experienced. She nursed him back to health as he went through months of heartworm treatment and recovery. She would rub coconut oil on his skin and helped him gain back 20lbs! She would invite me over to visit and each time I fell deeper and deeper in love. He was great with kids and cats which was the kind of pup I was looking to bring home. My husband doesn’t love barking and Sampson wasn’t a barker. My 6-yr-old just wanted a dog that wouldn’t “lick him like a lollipop.” Fast forward to now, my son complains that he doesn’t get enough kisses from Sampson. And although the cat might tell you otherwise, I saw her arch up and rub against his big chest the other day. When they think no one is watching, they rub noses. Basically, he was and is perfect for our family.

His Nextdoor post that led to his forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We’ve started hiking together and it’s so neat to see his confidence and energy when he gets into the woods. Sampson loves to lead the way, especially if that path crosses water. He loves to get his paws wet. We acquired a book of 60 hikes in Atlanta and hope we can do all of them together! In fact, we made it a family challenge this past weekend after we crossed Bear Creek Falls off our list.

What is life like since you rescued Sampson? Sampson came into my life at a time when everything felt chaotic. We had moved into a temporary apartment during a home renovation project that was not going smoothly. Work demands were high, and challenges were everywhere. It was not the best time to add more stress and responsibility to my own plate, when I was working so hard to keep it all together gracefully.

Into the chaos, walks this 65lb lug with the biggest head and even bigger heart. It was the universe intervening on my behalf. Sampson gets me up each morning with a smile and a wagging tail. He teaches me to stop and smell (or water) every flower, I mean he literally waters every bush on our walk to take my 6-yr-old son to school. He tells me when it’s time to take a break from the computer and get fresh air. He shows me how to be silly when he tosses his favorite bear high up in the air and catches it and shakes his head with glee. And every night at 7:30pm, he walks into his open crate, spins around and buries himself beneath his favorite blanket and lets me know it’s time to close my eyes, breathe deeply (or in his case, snore loudly), and start fresh the next day.

Every day he faces judgement as a large bully breed dog. People often stop me and say one of two things: “What a good-looking dog!” or “Is he a pit bull?” And then I watch as he defies stereotypes as people who say either of those two things see his gentle spirit and ask to rub his big, soft head. He looks so kind, they say. Sampson is not an American Pit bull Terrier; he is part American Bulldog, part Staffordshire Terrier. But, he is also part Boxer and even funnier, Boston Terrier. He is shy of other dogs but loves children and people in general. He hides behind me when a 4lb pug puppy walks by, but he wags his tail and play bows to the cat. He marches to his own drum and I try to honor who he is and what he needs. He’s an ambassador for all shelter dogs, for bully breed-type looking dogs, but he is so much more. He’s the best thing I never knew I needed.

Photographers Notes: I can’t say enough good things about Sampson. He is the sweetest, quietest, most gentle dog. Then on top of that he is just beautiful and really one of the best dog models. I barely had any outtakes from his shoot, because he is just an amazing poser. He will do anything for treats, minus a little drool (which I am so glad I actually captured in that photo above) he is really perfection.

I so love what Heather said about how Sampson helps her appreciate the important things and to take time to breath, relax & enjoy. I think anyone with a dog can appreciate those benefits. In return, this family see’s him as an individual, regardless of how he looks or his quirks and gives him what he needs. That is the best example of a reciprocal relationship that I can think of and what we should all strive for with our pets!

Now get this dog an agent! He should be in advertising!!!

Mitts - 10/21/18

Name: Mitts - 5 y/o

Family Members: Brian & Amy

How long has Mitts been in the family? Almost 2 years (Feb. 3, 2017)

Profession: Brian- Full-time student

Amy- Marketing Communications Coordinator

Location: Loganville, GA.

Nicknames: Mitty-moo, Mitty-girl, Moo, Big Booty Judy

5 words/phrases that best describe Mitts?

  1. Cuddle Bug

  2. Playful

  3. Loving

  4. Lover of the outdoors

  5. Forgiving

What makes Mitts unique? When we (Mitts & Amy) get up in the morning Brian is usually still in bed. After I feed her I make my way back to the bedroom to get ready for the day. Mitts thinks it’s her purpose to run and jump on the bed, sliding across it to put her wet, cold nose on Brian’s neck or face to gauge whether or not he’s awake. Then she’ll curl up and lay down at his feet or back.

Sweet face

Rescue Story: Our Boxer passed away in October of 2016. Our home was very quiet. I (Amy) met Lisa during grad school. Lisa runs Coastal Pet Rescue in Savannah. So, when we were interested in looking at another dog, we first turned to Coastal Pet Rescue. We saw Mitts’s picture and fell in love with her face (how could you not, it’s pretty darn cute).

Mitts and her puppies were confiscated by animal control. We’re not sure why. We do know she was used for breeding, a lot. Brian and I suspect there was some abuse from her former owners, too, but we don’t know for sure. Once at animal control, Coastal Pet Rescue swooped in and rescued her and her puppies.

Animal control named her Mitts because they thought she had big feet compared to her size. They thought her feet were as big as baseball mitts. I felt like she had had enough trauma and decided to keep the name. I’m not sure another name would fit her now.

Adoption Day!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We love to enjoy the outdoors; hike or take walks with Mitts. Mitts would probably say her favorite past time is to chase/hunt chipmunks.

What is life like since you rescued Mitts? We love Mitts. She’s full of adventure and shenanigans that keep us on our toes. She has stranger danger with humans and dogs she doesn’t know, but she’s come a long way since we’ve adopted her and we are continuing to see improvements in comfort ability with life. She loves to ride in the car/truck and loves to visit her cousins (dog) at Grandma’s house. I would say Mitts is pretty happy with her situation at our home. There’s nothing more she loves than to cuddle up to Brian or me on the couch in the evenings.

Photographers Note: As Amy mentioned above, Mitts isn’t so thrilled with strangers. So when we met at a big park, she wasn’t real pleased about this person joining her and her parents on her outdoor adventure. After a couple barks, she got use to me being near by and just kept a close eye on me! When we moved over to her cousins (Grandma’s) house next door to the park, then it was party time. She was so happy running around the yard and looking for various things to hunt with her boxer and pittie cousins. This dog is so adorable and I would have taken pictures of her forever, however she was so not into having her picture taken. Many times she tried to escape to the back porch to try and get Grandma to let her in the house. Thankfully she likes her treats because her parents were doling those out freely to get her to cooperate. (which worked like a charm) The best part was when we tried to get a cell phone photo taken of all of us, Brian had to pick her up and even then she wouldn’t look at the camera! She definitely wins the “over it” award!!

Squad Goals!

Mia - 10/13/18

Name: Mia - 8-ish y/o

Family Member: Stephanie

How long has Mia been in the family? Since July of 2016

Profession: Aquatics and Fitness Coordinator for the Campus Recreation Center at Georgia Tech

Location: Smyrna, GA.

Nicknames: Wiggle Butt, Princess, Little Girl, Mi-Mi, Mama Mia

5 words/phrases that best describe Mia?

  1. Sweet

  2. Silly

  3. Sensitive

  4. Professional Sleeper

  5. Hungry…ALWAYS!

What makes Mia unique? One of my favorite things about Mia is how she reacts when meeting new people. She turns on the wiggle butt for attention but stays calm so people can meet her on their terms. I’ve met so many people that were fearful of pits and were shocked she was a pit bull because she sat politely, waited for her head scratches, and licked the faces of people who let her. She has always been great with kids and babies, even army crawling over to them to stay low and not intimidate. Its like she just knows when to turn on her charm.

My reception may be off…..

Rescue Story: I had been considering getting a dog for a while and talked to some friends who got their pit from Bullseye Rescue and spoke very highly of the organization. I started keeping an eye on their adoptables and wanted to meet Mia as soon as I saw her pictures. She had a very sad story of ending up in a shelter with pneumonia, a respiratory infection, and a bad case of heartworm. Bullseye pulled her the morning she was scheduled to be put to sleep and she ended up with the most wonderful foster family. Mia stayed in her foster home for a year and half, and I’ll never know why, but she never got selected for adoption. I set up my meet and greet in her foster home and knew right away she was meant to come home with me. She was so lucky to have a great foster family and we are both lucky we still get to have regular visits with them. Mia gets so excited every time she sees her boys Gotti, Mr. Bloo, and Jimmy!

The day Mia was pulled from the shelter.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Mia absolutely LOVES going for rides in the car, being the door greeter at my local CrossFit gym, getting the occasional Puppachino from Starbucks, and visiting friends and family. Oh, and napping. She also loves napping.

What is life like since you rescued Mia? Not a day goes by since I got Mia that she hasn’t made me laugh. She can be such a goofball, but also knows when its time to just relax on the couch. We’ve explored new places together and its been so much fun introducing her to new people and having them see that yes, she’s a “pit bull,” but she’s also a total sweetheart.

Photographers Notes: I have met up with Stephanie and Mia many times over the last couple years during Pit Bull walks that are organized in and around the city of Atlanta. Since I am usually corralling my own dog I don’t get much of an opportunity to interact with Mia. So this was a fun shoot for me cause I got to have some time with her and love on her a little bit. Stephanie had borrowed a friends huge back yard so Mia had all kinds of space to run around. Well, it was a warm day and the running around didn’t last long…but there was plenty of opportunities for her to relax and put her ears on full display. She is really just the sweetest little peanut and clearly enjoys showing off that adorable smile!
