Hugo - 12/28/19

Name/Age: Hugo - 10 y/o

Family Members: Emily & Josh - Kids: Audra (1), Everett (3)

How long has Hugo been in the family? Almost 9 years

Professions: Transportation Consultant and Environmental Consultant

Location: Decatur, GA

Nicknames: Bears, Hugo Bears

5 words/phrases that best describe Hugo?

  1. Eternally Youthful

  2. Loving Big Brother

  3. Snuggly

  4. Loyal

  5. Sneaky

What makes Hugo unique? Hugo is very transparent with his feelings. We can tell when he’s happy, sad, scheming, concerned, feeling protective of his human siblings, and everything in between. He evens sighs loudly and slightly passive-aggressively when he’s clearly bored with whatever we’re doing and ready to move on.

Chewer of sticks!

Rescue Story: Josh and I adopted Hugo from the Atlanta Humane Society. We lived in an apartment at the time, and were looking for a dog that didn’t seem to bark too much and would be a good neighbor. Hugo was the only dog in a long row of kennels not barking, but just watching us. There was a note on his door saying that this dog had recently been returned by someone who had tried to adopt him. We took a chance and pulled him out for a playdate outside. Hugo came alive outside and darted back and forth between each of us. He was so happy and showed us his sweet personality that first day. We took him home and he has been a core part of the family since then. Sometimes we try to guess why he was returned by his previous owner– did he need too many snuggles? Was he too clever? Too kind? It doesn’t matter, because now he's all ours.

Hugo settling in to his forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We love to go walking and hiking with Hugo. He has to be in front, which conflicts with my 3-year old’s preference of walking with sticks, so we’ve had to get Hugo to hold back a bit recently. He seems to be okay though. While walking around the neighborhood on hot days, Hugo likes to roll on his back in almost every front yard he passes until he finds the perfect one to cool him down.

What is life like since you rescued Hugo? Josh and I became even more of a family when we rescued Hugo. Our weekends were centered around ways that we could spend more time with Hugo: parks, restaurants with dog-friendly patios, etc. Since our children were born, Hugo has been ever watchful of them. He follows our 1-year old around from room to room just far enough away to give her space, while keeping an eye on her (or the food she’s likely to drop). Hugo is their big brother, our first child.

Photographers Note: Watching Hugo with his tiny humans, is just so cute. He keeps an eye out for them but as stated above does allow them their space. He is of course thrilled when they become treat dispensers as well, if that’s intentional or accidental. When a dog has been a family member for awhile before the human siblings arrive, it’s always interesting to see how they react to that change. Hugo clearly has taken it in stride and moved right into the role of Big Brother without missing a beat.

Rosie - 12/21/19

Name/Age: Rosie - 3 y/o

Family Members: Jeremy, Amanda, human brother Landen (almost 16), Flash(RIP)- Basset Hound (12), Bailey - Dachshund (15)

How long has Rosie been in the family? Rosie has been with us since November 20, 2017

Professions: Jeremy is a elevator mechanic and works for Thyssen Krupp. He has been in the profession for 22 years. Amanda works for Builder first Source as an inside sale rep. I have been with them 12 years.

Location: Locust Grove, GA.

Nicknames: Rose, Rosebud

5 words/phrases that best describe Rosie?

  1. Loyal

  2. Loving

  3. Grateful

  4. Best Friend

  5. Playful

What makes Rosie unique? Rosie has an adventurous personality. She always wants to go. Her favorite things are boat and jet ski rides and pretty much anything that involves water. She is a great swimmer and loves playing ball. She loves dropping her tennis balls in the pool and then jumping in and getting them. She loves hard and is so loyal. She’s wanted nothing more then to be with her humans.

Rosie with her beloved tennis balls.

Rescue Story: My husband and I have been married only 3 year and together 4. When we started dating he had a white pittie named Bones. I fell in love with her and I guess him at the same time. A year before we started dating Bones suffered an FCE (stroke in her spinal cord) at the ripe age of 12. Bones and Jeremy had a special bond, he always said she could see into his soul. He recused her off the side of the road. She was nothing but skin and bones, that’s how she got her name. Jeremy said at points in his life, she was the only thing in this world he knew loved him. He saved her but honestly she saved him. Bones never really recovered fully from the FCE. Everyone thought he should put her down, but he wasn’t giving up on her because she never gave up on him. We lost Bones June 11, 2017 to mass cell. She fought one hell of a fight. She was 14 when Jeremy finally had to say good bye. A part of my husband left with her, he lost his best friend. I follow Fulton and DeKalb County Animal Shelters on Facebook and I kept seeing all these sweet babies needing homes. I talked Jeremy into going one Saturday to DeKalb just to “look”. We walked the whole place and I was a little taken back. I was shocked to be honest. I had never seen so many pitties in one place. It was heart breaking and overwhelming. Jeremy walked passed one kennel and Rosie (Brita was her name at the time) was in with a white pit. I over looked her and kept walking. After looking at all the dogs he went back to her. He asked if he could see her and they let us take her outside. He said she saw in my soul. I knew at that moment she was going home with us. Rosie was only 36 pounds when she was picked up. All we really know was she was picked up a few miles from the amours trip house. She has a few scars on her and was is bad shape. Today she is a solid 70 pounds!!

Rosie formally known as Brita.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We have so many, but our weekends at the lake are by far our and her favorite. We are an outdoors family for sure and Rosie fits in perfectly.

What is life like since you rescued Rosie? It’s complete! Rosie fits perfect in our crazy life and all our activities. We always talked about wanting a dog that loves all the stuff we like to do. Well, that’s our Rosie. She stayed in DeKalb for 3 months and people passed her by for a reason. She was waiting on us. You know the saying, someone’s trash is another’s treasure… Rosie is priceless to us.

Social Media: Instagram: @rosiewiliford tiktok - @amandahopewillifo

Photographers Note: I don’t think out of all of the dogs I have photographed over the last 5 years have I ever met one that is so obsessed with tennis balls like Rosie. She lives for her tennis balls. She can hold up to three in her mouth at one time, which means that when playing fetch there needs to be more then one tennis ball in the rotation. Jeremy & Amanda shared with me their tennis ball replenishment routine.(because she does like to destroy them as well) They purchase them used from Amazon, and dump them into a box that is in the garage. She checks that box regularly for new inventory and then makes her selections for the current fetch rotation. It was so much fun to see the joy on her face while her Dad threw her the tennis balls. In fact, it wasn’t easy to get a shot of her without at least one in her mouth until she got tired out!

As a side note, Amanda had contacted me after we initially scheduled our session to see if we could move it up. They had gotten heartbreaking news that their beloved Basset Flash had Lung Cancer and didn’t have much longer to live. She said I know this is about Rosie, but she really wanted to have him in their photo’s, which I of course said absolutely. I was truly honored to have gotten the opportunity to meet that sweet boy and take a couple of photos of him for his family, before he made his final trip to the Rainbow Bridge. Rest in Peace Sweet Flash!

Alli - 12/7/19

Name/Age: Alli - almost 2 y/o

Family Members: Scott and Robbi-Anne (Dad & Mom)

How long has Alli been in the family? 7 months

Professions: Scott is an analyst at BIP Capital & Robbi-Anne is a mental health therapist

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: AlliGator, AlliCat, AlliBurger, Monkey, Psycho

5 words/phrases that best describe Alli?

  1. Snuggly

  2. Athletic

  3. Hyper

  4. Playful

  5. Loyal

What makes Alli unique? Alli jumps about 5 feet in the air when excited in effort to kiss her humans on the face. Alli also lets out a very dramatic sigh when she is in her bed and ready to go to sleep.

Hello there!

Rescue Story: One Sunday afternoon, we decided to go to the Atlanta Humane Society as we were considering rescuing a dog soon. We saw Alli on the website and found it surprising that she had been in the shelter for more than 30 days, given her extreme cuteness. When we met Alli we were immediately drawn in to her wide smile and hyper spirit. While we both fell in love with her, we were nervous about having a dog her size in our small apartment, and decided we needed to wait to adopt. Leaving without her that day, we both could not stop thinking about that infectious spirit and bright smile. We woke up the next morning in agreement that we had to have this pup in our family. We rushed back to the shelter as soon as we got off work and adopted our Alli Gator. Life has never been the same since.

Alli came home on Scott’s birthday!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We love to go to any and all dog parks and watch Alli run around with all of her dog friends. Alli has never met a stranger and gives the most enticing play bow to every pup she meets. We also love playing fetch and watching Alli zoom around the yard when we get home from work.

What is life like since you rescued Alli? Life with our Alli girl has been nothing but joy and love. We are blown away by how quickly she stole our hearts and she is what we both look forward to when coming home from work. We have watched Alli learn tricks and positive behaviors, put on almost 10 pounds post shelter time, and get to meet an unending number of pups and humans to play with and love on as she receives endless love in return.

Photographers Note: Alli has such an amazing spirit. Just as it’s mentioned above she is very happy to meet new people and is just as sweet as she can be! She had a good ole’ time racing around her huge backyard showing off her jumping skills, stick chase, gather and chew skills and even did a couple flying leaps off the deck to show her aerodynamic abilities! You can’t help but smile when you are around her and just look at that gorgeous dark brindle coat she is sporting! After all that activity I was even given a nice escort to the door, with a quick kiss goodbye!

Smooshy - 11/30/19

Name/Age: Smooshy – 2 ½-3 years old (we think)

Family Members: Amanda & Nick (humans) and Sage (5 ½, rescue from Fulton County)

How long has Smooshy been in the family? Since September 22, 2018

Professions: Amanda – Paralegal

Nick – Legal Assistant & full-time law student at Georgia State Law

Location: Smyrna, GA

Nicknames: Moosh, Moody, Boy, Sir Smooshington, Mr. Smooshy Face (his shelter name), Thump-Thump, Mack-Mack, Thumpy

5 words/phrases that best describe Smooshy?

  1. Comforting

  2. Loving

  3. Gentle

  4. Incredible

  5. Strong

What makes Smooshy unique? Smooshy is unique for a lot of reasons, but the main one would probably be the fact that he’s afraid of the outdoors. He’s the first dog I have ever had with that fear, so it’s certainly been an adjustment. Thankfully, it has gotten a lot better since he’s been with us! We don’t mind it, of course, because we’d rather be at home with him than doing anything else.

Smooshy in one of his outdoor happy places, the dog park at their apartment complex.

Rescue Story: We went to Dekalb Animal Shelter on September 22, 2018 after seeing Smooshy’s (fka Mr. Smooshy Face) very popular adoption video on Facebook. I had no clue how he had not been adopted already; I literally checked their website every day to make sure someone hadn’t gotten to him before we did. We arrived at Dekalb and asked them to bring him outside. They brought out this underweight, stinky boy that had scabs all over him and told us he was surrendered by his previous owners. I looked into his eyes and saw something I had never seen before in a dog. I asked for the adoption papers immediately and we picked him up a few days later. Smooshy made himself at home instantly, and our other dog absolutely loved him (which was surprising). We were so excited to have him home and he seriously fit right in, but it was the start of some very long, hard first months together. He was diagnosed with demodex mange and he quickly lost over 50% of his coat. He finally grew almost all of it back at the end of January 2019. About a week after we finished treatment, he ruptured his CCL in his left leg. He had TPLO surgery on February 26. I couldn’t believe all that he was going through in such a short time. Surrendered to the shelter in July, adopted by us in September, mange treatment, and knee surgery in 5 months. Needless to say, our first year together was rough. But it was also the best year of our lives and really made us close. I didn’t think it was possible, but Smooshy only got sweeter and more loving as the days passed. He never let life get him down. He is the kindest, most incredible soul I have ever known. He is so appreciative of his life and is seriously so amazing.

First meeting with Smooshy!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Since Smooshy doesn’t enjoy being outside, our favorite past time is watching Netflix together. He loves to cuddle up on the couch and will stay there all day with you.

What is life like since you rescued Smooshy? It’s very difficult to put it into words how much Smooshy has changed our lives. For me personally, he is everything to me. He has made our other dog much happier and more friendly in many ways. Our friends and family absolutely adore him. We feel like life is complete now that he is in our lives. Life is just better with Smooshy.

Social Media: Instagram: @smooshythepitbull

Photographers Note: Amanda had let me know Smooshy wasn’t so comfortable outside of his immediate vicinity and he was the most comfortable in the dog park in their apartment complex. Boy was he comfortable, zoomies all around, playing with his toy duck and in general just happy as could be. To see this boy now and hear about the rough start he had, you would never know. He is happy, sweet & has a flair for fashion . (he has a pretty extensive bow tie collection so wearing the SALA bow tie was second nature). His coat has grown in beautifully and he moves around like a surgery never occurred. I will admit I was already following Smooshy on Instagram when Amanda reached out and was pretty excited to meet this handsome boy in person. People always say that Instagram persona’s are never reality, but in this case Smooshy was reality and more!

Playing with sister Sage!

  1. Sensitive

  2. Gentle

  3. Loving

  4. Tenacious

  5. Bossy

Luke:

  1. Affectionate

  2. Playful

  3. Intuitive

  4. Kind

  5. Obedient

What makes Bo & Luke unique? Bo is 84lbs. However, he has no idea he is big. He gets a little scared of little dogs sometimes and runs away. Sometimes tiny doggies can be really scary when they bark a lot. Bo is a big Teddy Bear. If we are walking and someone is scared of him, he can sense it. He will roll over and show his belly. However, sometimes his lip will accidentally fall and his teeth will be exposed. Bo’s mama thinks his teefies are cute and his smile is adorable. Sometimes people get more scared when they see his teeth. Bo patiently waits for their belly rubs. Sometimes his feelings get hurt, but he still smiles and keeps going. One of Bo’s best friend is my 2 year old niece Layla. He likes her mostly because she drops more food than she puts in her mouth. Bo thinks that this is the best quality in a best friend.

Luke Loves to watch TV. We had to stop watching the Pit Bull rescue show because it made him too sad. Luke loves to watch happy shows like Greys Anatomy and The Bachelor. Luke is hoping they have a doggie version of the Bachelor show some day. Luke would love to be the Doggie Bachelor. Luke does well with the lady doggies. Luke is very kind and affectionate. He stares at his mom and gently licks her chin regularly. People are always scared of Luke because someone chopped his ears. But they have no idea that he is one of the kindest doggies that god ever made. Anyone that gets to know Luke, loves him. When he has to get a shot, he licks his vet. When someone says something mean or are unkind to him, he shows them love. Luke was abused in his last home, but it doesn’t stop him from having the biggest doggie heart!!!! Luke is the definition of unconditional Love. He evens loves children and is gentle with little ones. He makes sure to give the little ones extra gentle kisses.

Bo with his sweet stoic expression.

Luke thinks there is nothing better then destroying this football!

Rescue Stories: Bo came from Fulton County Animal Services. A friend of mine had shared Bo’s story on FB. Bo was urgent. He had heart worms and was a little too sensitive for Shelter life. He got his feelings hurt a lot in the Shelter. He had scars & staples in his head from his previous life. Someone was very mean to Bo. I wasn’t looking for a dog and had never had one. I went to just “see him” and fell in love at first sight. Bo has a big huge doggie smile that I just couldn’t resist. Bo cried very softly all the way home because he was scared. When he got home, he walked the whole house. Bo found a little corner and went to sleep. Bo slept and slept and slept for 10 hours. Bo changed my life. I never knew how amazing pit bulls were. Bo taught me about unconditional love. I felt so lucky to have gotten such an amazing dog. I wondered if all Pit Bulls were this sweet or if I had just gotten lucky?

The happiest intake photo!

About one year after I got Bo, I decided that my townhouse wasn’t good enough. I wanted Bo to have his own backyard to run and play. So I decided to build a new house. It was almost Christmas time and all Bo wanted for Christmas was a brother! Again, I saw someone share an urgent dog on FB. His Shelter name was Snoop Dog. I went to Cobb County Shelter. Luke was sick. He was so skinny that you could see all his ribs and spine. He also had burn scars. Someone was not very nice to him. Luke was sitting in that cage with his head drooped down like he had given up. Luke came out of his cage and mustered just enough energy to lick my chin! It was all over, he was going home with his new mama and brother! It didn’t take long before he was healthy and happy! I cant even begin to tell you how amazing Luke is! He came perfectly trained. He has never had one accident In the house l He is the model dog! Now I know, it wasn’t just that Bo was an amazing dog, the Breed is AMAZING!!!!! I really encourage anyone that is thinking about getting a dog to consider a rescue pittie. My two were thrown way and abused by someone else. But with a little bit of love they blossomed into AMAZING companions for me. They both came already trained. They appreciate your love so much more. You save them and they save you. My Bo and Luke most definitely have given me back a million times more happiness than I could have ever given them. They are the best decisions of my life!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Luke, Bo and I like to go for car rides. We like to roll the windows down and cruise. We sometimes just cruise around and visit friends , so they can feel the breeze blowing in their hair! LOL

What is life like since you rescued Bo & Luke? Bo and Luke are the best decision that I’ve ever made. They complete my life. I thank god every day for bringing these sweet babies to me. They needed my help to get healthy. But there isn’t a moment that passes with them that I cant help but smile. They are loving, kind & silly. They make me laugh daily. I had no idea the love I was missing before I got these boys! It hurts every day to think that people judge the breed without truly knowing them. Bo and Luke have changed so many opinions. To know them is to love them. I’m gonna keep dressing them in silly clothes and letting them spread the love with their kindness. We hope one day, people realize just how awesome Pitties are.

Photographers Note: I mean just look at these two. They are just so sweet and adorable. Each with their own personality. Bo is definitely the more reserved of the two, his facial expression reminded me of Eeyore. He was not a huge fan of getting his photo taken but definitely came alive when he was playing in the yard with his brother. Thankfully he didn’t hold the camera against me and still was good with getting some attention from me! Now Luke, as Krisie mentioned people may be intimidated by this big boy due to his looks, but man what a love bug. He just wanted to show off and get affection. When Krisie reached out she had gotten some upsetting news about Luke’s health so wanted to be sure he could be part of Shine a Light in time as a perfect example of the kind of dog that will change peoples perceptions. By the time, I showed up at Krisie’s house, she had gotten a second opinion and a completely different and FAR better diagnosis, which was amazing to hear. Now both boys had recent surgeries and were healing with stitches; Luke in his groin and Bo in his ear. Both were supposed to be taking it easy, especially Luke….but a crisp morning and a toy was just too much to keep these two on the bench! Thankfully everyone was still good at the end and no stitches were popped! (plus they had a blast) :) The best was when I was leaving, Krisie and I were talking on the driveway and I looked back at the front door, there is Luke peaking through the glass door, just his eyes & the top of his head showing in the window. He clearly didn’t want his new friend to leave!

The sweetest pibble brothers!

Sweet Gemma Girl!

Rescue Stories: We had just lost our other dog (put to sleep that day) and I asked Tyler if he wanted to go to the Humane Society to look. He agreed to just going to LOOK. Gemma chose us. She would literally scream when we walked away from her puppy pen. She would use that scream to demand things for quite some time. Ha! She was found as a stray at about 3 weeks old in West Palm Beach Florida with demodex mange. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue pulled her from the shelter and had her for several weeks until Hurricane Irma was approaching Florida and Wings of Rescue flew adoptable animals north (we lived in Michigan at the time) to clear the shelters in advance of the hurricane. Gemma went to The Toledo Area Humane Society where we rescued her.

Gemma heading to her forever home!

The manager of the rescue (Life is Labs/iWag in Temple, GA) got her from a dire owner surrender situation. She had severe demodex mange. As soon as I saw her picture on their Facebook page I knew she had to be mine. I kept telling Darian that, but it took me 6 weeks to get Tyler to go see her. He instantly fell in love.

Rylee, such a difference care & a loving forever home can make!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Nature Walks

What is life like since you rescued Gemma & Rylee? Gemma is thrilled she has a playmate now that we have Rylee. I love my cats, but there is nothing like the companionship of a dog. Life is BUSY. These two are like having toddlers. Ha!!! Because of Gemma I have met wonderful people in Georgia that have become friends.

Social Media Accounts: Instagram: lovelyrylee

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lovelyrylee/

Photographers Note: I met up with this wonderful family at Clinton Nature Preserve. Little did we know there was a multiple school cross country race going on, which meant a lot of people, cars & buses. Thankfully Sindy & Tyler found a spot at the back of the parking area that was pretty quiet and green! . I was greeted immediately by Gemma & Rylee. They were very excited to meet a new friend. Can you even believe the dog in the “before” photo above is Rylee? This girl is so beautiful with her shiny coat and light green eyes. Then you have little Gemma, who’s cute little button nose you just want to kiss all the time and those little ears that flop over just at the top! Too cute! These girls were a riot, it was like they knew they were the center of attention and were going to treat it like a party! So much personality!

What makes Bane & Olive unique? Bane thinks he’s a little, furry human. We don’t dare tell him otherwise. Other than her loud snoring, Olive shows affection to everyone she meets whether it be dogs or humans. She loves them all!

Bane & his adorable smile!

Play time for Olive!

Rescue Stories: We rescued him October 23rd 2016 when he was about 7 months old from Fulton County Animal Services. My husband noticed him sitting quietly in the back of a kennel with 5 other pit bulls running around. Bane was the only one who didn't come up to the gate, but when my husband, Cole, knelt down to his level, he wiggled his butt over to him and started giving Cole kisses.

We saw many dogs that day when we were looking to adopt but we didn't find that chemistry until we found Bane. When the staff put Bane (previously Maliki) in the play pen with us, I was sitting down across the pen to see what he would do. He immediately saw me, jumped in my lap, and would not move. He didn't have any interest of being free and outside, he just wanted to love and be loved.

The shelter said that he had previously been rescued, but returned for reasons unbeknownst to us. He had chunks of hair missing and was underweight. He had an upper respiratory infection, so we had to wait until the next day to pick him up. Those were the longest hours of our lives!

When we picked up him, he was so excited he peed all over the floor LOL, but we didn't care. We took him home with us that day and he slept for two days straight being out of the loud shelter. He slept right between my husband and me and hasn't left our bed since. He was 30lbs when we adopted him, and within a few months, he gained almost another 30lbs and got all his hair back (thank you, coconut oil!)

Bane settling in nicely his first night in his forever home!

Cole and I have been thinking about getting Bane a little sister for about a year. I’ll scroll through the Fulton County Animal Shelter website from time to time. When I found Olive’s photo, I immediately went to the shelter. Her background is that she was rescued from a cruelty case and brought in with her mom and sister after being confiscated. When I went to the shelter and they pulled her from her kennel, she didn’t have much interest in being outside with me, but the staff told me she was suffering from an upper respiratory infection so she wasn’t feeling her best. I pulled her into my lap and her tail began to wag. She started licking my face and snuggling into me, making it clear she did not want to leave my lap! Cole came to the shelter and immediately fell in love with her. We took her home the next day to meet her brother Bane. They are the most perfect match and get along better than we could’ve imagined.

Olive bonding quickly with her new brother!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? : Bane travels with us every chance he can. He loves going to new places and meeting new people. It’s really helped him develop socially, but has also opened Cole and me up to a new community of awesome people who also love these sweet dogs.

Well we’ve only had Olive for almost a month (at the time of submission), but we’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching her experience things for the first time. The first time she felt tall grass, she got so excited and started rolling on her back in it!

What is life like since you rescued Bane & Olive? Bane lives to love others, whether it be people or other animals. He’s taught us to be kinder people, have patience, be more open minded, and always approach life with a smile. Not a day goes by where he doesn’t express his love and gratitude to us, and we do our best to show the same to him. He has completely changed our lives and I hope more people will realize how loyal and unconditionally loving pit bulls can be.

Olive has been the perfect little addition to our family. Since we adopted her – her ears have perked up more, she’s come out of her shell, and she’s becoming more and more comfortable every day. You can just tell she’s happy to have a family. It’s heartwarming to see. We thought having two dogs was going to big a tough transition, but she’s made it a joy! Life is amazing with rescue dogs!

Photographers Note: While Becky & I were coordinating timing for Bane’s photo shoot, they adopted Olive. I was so thrilled to be able to have both of these adorable babies featured here. To see the two of them together running around and playing, you would have thought they had been together always. They get a long so well and their play styles match perfectly.(their shared dinosaur featured often in the shots taken) Both of them are so well behaved and loving, plenty of cuddles and kisses given to the photographer during our time together. I was frankly really surprised how much Olive listened to her parents and followed Bane’s lead on everything. First, she is still a puppy but also she hadn’t been with her family for very long. Both of these pups in their forever home, with all the love they need from their parents and a perfect partner in crime in each other.; the definition of a happy ending!

Legion & Malak - 10/5/19

Name: Legion - 3 y/o & Malak- 4 y/o

Family Members: Tiffany, Kevin, Xavian (9), & Dastian (4)

How long have Legion & Malak been in the family? Legion has been in the family for 3 years & Malak it will be 2 years in December.

Professions: Management, Office Administration

Location: Savannah, GA

Nicknames: Legion: Brown Dog Malak: 2-toned short snout

Legion

Malak

5 of the best words/phrases that describe Legion & Malak?

Legion:

  1. Ridiculous

  2. Stunning

  3. Pitiful

  4. Amazing

  5. Ridiculous (LOL!)

Malak:

  1. Perfect

  2. Gentle

  3. Loving

  4. Snuggler

  5. Good Boy

What makes Legion & Malak unique? Legion has a good heart. If a dog can have compassion, Legion has it. He is also a leg-licker (unique quality, lol), and he "smiles" when he's excited - especially when his dad gets home from work.

If there were a dog competition for snuggling, Malak would take the Gold! He's super loving and super gentle (even though he can play soooo rough with Legion). He can also scale a 6 foot privacy fence...but that's a story for another time. ;)

Stunning boy that is Legion

Sweet Boy Malak!

Rescue Stories: Legion, along with his siblings and mother, were seized from a dog-fighter. (Guy is in prison with 5 counts of dog fighting!) His mother was used for breeding purposes. (His Mother was also a past volunteer for Shine A Light, http://www.shineliteatl.com/new-blog-1/2018/11/11/mitts-102118) The rescue got them, I saw his sweet little picture and the rest is history.

Puppy Legion

Malak was in Animal Control two separate times for quite a while. He had people in there fighting for him. We happened to see that adoptions were free and we saw his picture - we "just went in to look," hahaha! He's been our love ever since!

Malak in his final forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Snuggling & hiking

What is life like since you rescued Legion & Malak? Legion has been right at home ever since he moved in.  He's such a social dog and always loved going to the dog park (until his CCLs were torn - he just had bilateral surgery to fix that...what a story that is!).

From the moment we brought Malak home, him and Legion have been best friends. They snuggle together soooo much and play so hard. It's like they were best friends always. It did take him a little adjustment, as with any shelter dog, but he knew he had a place on the bed from day one. Our dogs now sleep with the children at night. I never have to worry about them. ;)

Photographers Note: Tiffany, Kevin & family were my last volunteers for the Savannah trip. Unfortunately the lovely weather we had in the morning had completely gone by the time I was to meet them in the afternoon. We are talking Tropical Storm kind of rain amounts and every time we thought we saw a break in the radar, it disappeared just as fast. So Tiffany suggested we meet up under the Cotton Exchange on River Street which is covered. So this family tromped through the pouring down rain decked out in rain jackets and umbrellas to meet up with me. The dogs of course seemed to be phased not at all. They just went a long with the flow and maybe here and there get distracted by the occasional bird or tourist that was also seeking shelter from the rain. I mean how gorgeous are these two pibbles….so handsome. Legion has almost an Eeyore quality about him; quiet and sweet, with those soulful eyes. Malak was a little more excited for the adventure and what was going to happen next. I was so appreciative that these folks were flexible and didn’t let the rain scare them off, so they could tell their sweet pups stories. The things that we will do to help change perceptions! :)

Kaleb - 10/5/19

Name/Age: Kaleb - 2 y/o

Family Members: Becca & Chris Fur babies: Zeus-11, Mya-3 & Wishbone-2

How long has Kaleb been in the family? Since December 2017

Profession: Becca is a Dental Assistant & Chris is a painter and runs their coating business

Location: Savannah, GA

Nicknames: Binky Boy, Bink the Stink, Kay-Wub, Boo Bear, Pear Boy, Smushface

5 words/phrases that best describe Kaleb?

  1. Extremely Goofy

  2. Loves every human he meets

  3. No sense of personal space

  4. Professional Drooler

  5. Insists on bringing his "binky" (a monkey that used to be stuffed) everywhere he goes

What makes Kaleb unique? He's a tripod!  He is missing one of his back legs, so watching him run is hilarious.  He tries to scratch himself with his stub, and his stub vibrates uncontrollably when you rub his belly.  He also loves to roll around on his back on any given bed or couch and make the loudest noises that sound like 2 bears fighting! He also doesn't bark.  Instead, he makes this odd whining noise that sounds like a mix between squeaky brakes and a balloon losing air.  He's so weird.

Goofy boy with his “binky” by his side!

Rescue Story: Kaleb came into our local animal control as a stray. He stayed there for 7 months, much longer than the usual bully. The associate director was very fond of him and kept pulling him from death row. She finally convinced the local rescue that I was associated with to pull him on December 22, 2017, the last pull of the year. The foster coordinator was VERY concerned about him, as she had been following him during his time at animal control and was witnessing him shutting down. My house was open for another foster, so I took him in. We had him for about two months when an unforeseen tragedy occurred. Kaleb had an affinity for jumping the fence, and one night did not clear it and found himself hanging. We rushed him to our vet. He had shattered his left fibula, joint, and wrist. There was no other option than to amputate the leg. Post surgery, there were multiple complications including serious infections, and I was terrified of losing him. After months of nursing him back to health, rehabing his walking, and almost losing him to sepsis, we had formed a bond. I knew that I would be incapable of adopting him out and he officially became part of our family.

Before it was made official!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? My favorite thing to see him do is interact with the neighbor kids that we share a fence with. They used to be very weary of bullies and used to back away when they saw him. Now, they will stand in the yard and call for him, awaiting with treats, sticks, balls and pears. They will entertain each other as long as I will allow! Watching how much he loves kids while also witnessing the transformation of how they see the bully breeds never gets old for me.

What is life like since you rescued Kaleb? Kaleb has filled my heart with more love than I ever thought it could contain. He is my reason to get up in the morning, he is my relief when I have a bad day, and he's my pillow when I am sick. He is my shadow and the love of my life. It would now be inconceivable to picture life without him, he is everything. Boy, is he spoiled. That boy has claimed the guest room as "his room", he has sweaters, football jerseys, cowboy hats, bandanas, and I made him a pirate outfit with his own custom peg leg. His life has certainly turned around from living on death row to living the dream.

Photographers Note: Kaleb was my last volunteer in the beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery and the clouds had started to come in, so I was really hoping we would get this in before the rain came. I completely forgot about the weather when this energetic boy with a huge smile came bounding out of the car. Kaleb was just hilarious and had me laughing through out the shoot. Goofy is the perfect word for him…..I did get to witness the rolling around on his back complete with sound effects, which he displayed when I had said we were done! Guess he was celebrating?? We even had a brief case of the zoomies that we had to deal with. Honestly he did great and was an excellent poser when properly rewarded, I think even his Mom was surprised how good he did! Now Kaleb’s story is a heart breaking one for sure but to see this sweet happy boy living his best life with his forever family who adore him; you know there is no looking back for him. Oh and it started to rain, just as Kaleb got into his car to head home and he looked out at me through the window with that big beautiful smile.

Gator - 10/5/19

Name/Age: Gator - 12 y/o

Family Members: Jennifer, no human children. 4 - legged children: I have a Tree Hound named Bailey that was a foster fail because she likes to take out men by their Achilles. I have my older hounds Breeze and Pretty. I also have Allen Frog, he was feral when he came to me with his brother Edgar. They had scabies I fostered them that was fun…

How long has Gator been in the family? 1 year

Profession: RN Trauma ICU & Director of Renegade Paws Rescue

Location: Savannah, GA.

Nicknames: Gator Bait

4 words/phrases that best describe Gator?

  1. Outgoing

  2. Loving

  3. Hungry

  4. Sleepy

What makes Gator unique? Gator is the most outgoing of my babies. He is a favorite everywhere he goes. He will put his big ole head in your lap and wait for you to pet him. He is perfect and I could not love him more.

Gator with the beautiful eyes and the big contagious smile.

Rescue Story: Gator was a junk yard dog and was not ever allowed to be pet, he is 12 years old and has heartworms. Everyone loves Gator, he goes out and plows down stereotypes. Even people that don’t like “pit bulls” love Gator. He is not a candidate for fast kill HW treatment so he decided to stay here and eat chicken and pizza.

Gator heading home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We foster many dogs and Gator helps to make them more adoptable by teaching them how to dog. Gator also loves to take short rides to Starbucks for Puppuccinos.

What is life like since you rescued Gator? Gator is the type of dog that would not have had a chance without rescue. And to be very honest with you, when the days in rescue get sad and hard all I need to do is look at him and I remember why it is worth it. He is how I keep going when it is too hard, because I know they are worth every single tear and every 12 hour day.

Photographers Note: Where do I start, this is going to be a long one. First of all Jennifer was the person who reached out to me about coming to Savannah. She had rescued one of my past volunteers (Mama Mitts) and learned about Shine A Light when her Mom posted Mitt’s story. She was absolutely amazing, she found all the volunteers for me and from there it was just coordination. It went so well, I already promised her I would be back down.

Next Gator, what can I say about this lumbering goofy boy. I only got to spend a short time with him but I was smitten pretty quickly. He has that huge contagious smile with those beautiful blue eyes and then all he wants to do is be near you and be loved on. However, this boy is no fool; my usual tricks to get the ears up and a smile from the pups did not work for him. I had to resort to the crinkle of a treat bag and the highest (and most annoying) squeaky voice I could manage. Once I got the shot he made e beeline over to me and just laid in my lap. See what I mean, completely smitten!

Originally Jennifer had planned on featuring two of her dogs, however as we were going through the coordination aspects of the trip her pup NeNe passed away. Absolutely heart breaking for Jennifer and her family of pups. After reading about her and seeing her rescue picture, I so wish I had the opportunity to meet her. She will always live on in Jennifer and in every pit bull that Jennifer helps to rescue and provide a good home to. I wanted to be sure to share some of NeNe’s story with you all:

NeNe was confiscated by Chatham County Animal Services from a fighting ring. She was used as a breeder and bait dog. She came to rescue with her 5 puppies. She came to me as a foster but people did not understand that she could be a good family pet, she actually loves children. I took her to a few events and people were scared of her because of her scars. The last event I took her to she looked up at me and I felt something, and in that moment, I could not let her go. I have fostered more then 100 dogs and let them go, NeNe was meant to be mine.

NeNe was 7 years old and had been with Jennifer for 3 years.

RIP Sweet Girl

Ralph - 10/5/19

Name/Age: Ralph - 2 1/2 yrs old.

Family Members: Mary, Seth & Elmer (Basset/Beagle mix)- 7 yrs old

How long has Ralph been in the family? Almost 2 yrs, we adopted Ralph when he was just 4 months old.

Professions: Seth is an IT specialist at St. Joseph/Candler Hospital and Mary is a registered nurse at Memorial Health, as well as a nurse practitioner student who is graduating in December.

Location: We currently live in Savannah, Ga and are both originally from the area.

Nicknames: Ralphie or Ralph S. Mouse

5 words/phrases that best describe Ralph?

  1. Sweet

  2. Gentle

  3. Playful

  4. Adventurous

  5. Loves to de-stuff toys

What makes Ralph unique? Ralph likes to greet everyone by walking between their legs. No matter if he knows them or not, they will soon be up close and personal with Ralph. He often does this at the dog park to innocent bystanders who are least expecting it. It’s hilarious to see their reactions, especially when they are leaning down to greet him and he skips the pet and heads straight for the walk through!

Sweet, smiling boy!

Rescue Story: We found out about Coastal Pet Rescue (CPR) through a work friend, Jen. She was actually the person who rescued Ralph, his three brothers, and their mother (NeNe). The boys were very young at the time of their rescue. They were found in a home which was a breeding establishment for fighting pit bulls. Their mother, NeNe, had plenty of scars to show how awful the conditions were. Ralph would have been raised in cages only knowing cruelty, pain, and fighting the rest of his life if not for Jen and CPR.

Jen told us about how sweet and playful the puppies were, and after we saw photos online, we had to meet him. We visited his foster home, where he was patiently sitting next to his foster mom. He was easily approachable, and all he wanted to do was lick us. We knew we wanted him as a part of our family from the moment we saw/met him. We quickly notified the rescue, and within a week, he was ours forever.

Puppy Ralph!

Ralph & his Brothers Safe!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We absolutely love taking Ralph on walking trails in wooded areas, he loves nature and the freedom to roam. He can be a little shy/scared with loud noises (like the train that passes our house often), but in the woods, he is confident and happy. We took him to a cabin in the mountains last year, and he could hardly wait for everyone to wake up so he could explore the outdoors and creek behind the house. He also hiked to the top of Amicalola Falls and loved it!

What is life like since you rescued Ralph?Initially, it was daunting bringing a new puppy into the home, especially with a much older, less active dog. But honestly, he made us a family and now we couldn’t imagine life without him.

Personally, (Mary speaking) he is my first dog. I have always been nervous around dogs because of a childhood experience, and not knowing much about pit bulls, I was scared he would be aggressive. But Ralph has changed my perception of dogs, and I realized the stigma surrounding pit bulls is far from the truth. Ralph is honestly the sweetest, most gentle, quiet, obedient dog ever. He is WONDERFUL with my nephews and wants nothing but to love everyone.

Needless to say Ralph changed our world for the better. He loves to cuddle up to us and his big brother Elmer. Although Ralph doesn’t like the car rides, he loves to explore the destinations we end at like the woods, dog parks, and the beach. He is becoming more confident at his swimming skills, but he still wears his life jacket for safety. He gave us a scare at a party with friends when he got stuck under a dock and Seth had to jump in to save him, so the life jacket is now mandatory. We have a great group of friends, and most of them have dogs, so it's nice to get everyone together and let the kids play.

Photographers Note: Volunteer #2 at beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery. There is something that goes through my head when you see a Basset and a pittie walking toward you, like it’s the start of a joke, “A basset hound and a pit bull walk into a bar”. You can not help but smile when you see the two of them approaching. Ralph is just the happiest sweetest boy and turns out is quite a model. He definitely had some impressive poses and has nailed the head tilt. 100% agree with Mary’s comment above about him loving the adventure, so many great smells but when it was time for him to be “on” with the proper motivation (treats), he posed with the best of them!

  4. Loves Puppies

  5. Let females boss him around

Eva:

What makes River & Eva unique? They are both loving dogs, while River is also protective & Eva is kind.

River striking a pose!

Side sit with a smile from Eva

Rescue stories: River was found as a stray in Savannah. He spent a couple months in Animal Control and was a staff favorite. If I didn’t agree to foster him, he would have been put down. Eva was found with her brother as puppies, about 6 weeks old. We fostered both of them and kept Eva.

River getting ready to go to his foster then forever home.

Puppy Eva

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Probably hanging out & playing at home. They both enjoy when I bring a new foster home. River & Eva have been very good at teaching manners to puppies.

What is life like since you rescued River & Eva? River & Eva have filled my life. I did not think I was a dog person until I started to foster dogs. I (Suzanne) have learned a lot about dog behavior and become a strong handler of dogs; when I used to be scared of them because I was bitten as a child.

Social Media: Follow the Instagram Hashtags: #mybeauriver & #prettyevagirl

Photographers Notes: Suzanne, Cesar, River & Eva were my first volunteers for the Savannah trip. 4 of our 5 volunteers were meeting me in beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery. Suzanne had mentioned that River gets a little excited and generally is better with strange women then men. Well I would say River, Eva and I became fast friends. (photo evidence below) These two were just the sweetest and paid the photographers tax with plenty of kisses during the shoot. We had such a great time and I loved hearing about all the fosters that have been successfully adopted from their home, with River & Eva playing key roles in socialization for those pups. In fact, Suzanne was going to be picking up another foster later that day. Cesar was sweet to brag about his wife and her successes with finding homes for all these dogs (I can’t remember the exact number but it was high). All this from a women who use to be afraid of dogs and overcame those fears to be a dog lover! What a great parallel to what we are trying to do with this project, because unfortunately fear is a big driver of the opinions that are formed about these types of dogs and with every story we are working to help people over come those fears and change their perceptions.

Photographer covered in kisses!

Sheila E. - 9/28/19

Name/Age: Sheila E. - 3-ish y/o

Family Members: Katy & Griff (humans), Annabelle Rose- Annie for short (dog 8ish, also adopted and maybe some pitty?)

How long has Shelia been in the family? September 2018, officially adopted January 2019

Professions: Katy - Sales Manager at GWCC & Griff- Investment Consultant at TD Ameritrade

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: She really doesn’t have any…

5 words/phrases that best describe Sheila E.?

  1. Loving

  2. Loyal

  3. Protective

  4. Shy

  5. Gassy

What makes Sheila E. unique? She has the most beautiful, sweet temperament and loves to snuggle under her humans. She also has little regard for personal space and will sit directly on top of her sister.

Happy Girl!

Rescue Story: The weather was perfect one Saturday in September and we decided to do Weekend Warrior ( a program through Lifeline to get dogs out of the shelter for a weekend) and give a shelter dog some love. When I went to pick one up, I was asked to please consider taking Sheila (her name was Sheba back then). They said she wasn’t doing well in the shelter and really needed to get out. I said sure and took her home where she cowered and kept her tail pinned to her belly. She was shaking and couldn’t relax. We took her to play and she just stood around like she wasn’t sure what to do. We couldn’t get her to eat (not even bacon!) and she just seemed defeated. By the time Sunday afternoon came, I couldn’t stand the thought of her going back to the shelter because it didn’t seem like she’d gotten anything out of the 36 hours we were together. I reached out to Fulton County Animal Services and asked if we could keep her for a couple more days.

Over the next week we found ways to get her to eat- putting cheese in her food, giving it to her in her “corner”, etc. She slowly started making progress and of course by then my thinking was that if we took her back to the shelter now, she would revert to being scared and timid and lose what progress she’d made. After all, she’s more likely to get adopted if she’s socialized. :) And that brought us to Christmas where my fiance’s mother had a stocking and custom coat made with her name embroidered on them. Needless to say we realized that she was truly ours at that point and finalized it shortly after. Now she loves dog parks, car rides, and snuggling on the couch.

Sheila E’.s shelter listing.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Our favorite thing is to watch her and her sister play in wide open spaces. She loves to wrestle and roll around in grass. It’s just so great to see her carefree and happy after experiencing how she was straight from the shelter.

What is life like since you rescued Sheila E.? Magical!! She’s given our 8 year old dog new life and now my fiancé and I both have a dog to snuggle instead of fighting over just one. She’s gained 10 lbs and you can no longer see her ribs. I like to think that she’s pretty happy with us as well.

Photographers Note: I met up with this adorable little family at Piedmont Park and Sheila was in fact a little shy at first. I let her do her thing and didn’t push to interact with her. (as much as I wanted to love on that cute face) Well once they let her off leash to run around a bit, this sweet girl just came alive. She raced around with the biggest smile on her face and then spent a fair amount of time rolling in the dirt, much to her Mom’s dismay. (she had just had a bath for her photo shoot). Of course her sister Annie wanted in on the fun as well, with some wrestling. To hear how this beautiful pup started; so shut down and scared, to see her now with humans she adores and her BFF/Sister Annie, she is definitely living “The Glamorous Life” now. (sorry couldn’t resist the Sheila E reference here)

Sibling Love!

Lula Mae - 9/22/19

Name/Age: Lula Mae - 2 y/o

Family Members: Steve & David

How long has Lula Mae been in the family? 6 months

Professions: Steve- Physician David - Behavioral Scientist

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: Lu, Lula, Sweet Girl

5 words/phrases that best describe Lula Mae?

  1. Gentle

  2. Loving

  3. Calm

  4. Loyal

  5. Sweet

What makes Lula Mae unique? She loves to give everyone a “standing hug” as her greeting.

Lula Mae’s Hug!

Rescue Story: After losing our dog of 18 years and grieving, we opened our hearts to a rescue that needed a loving home & saw a picture of Lula on the Nextdoor neighborhood app in March. A young couple was fostering her in hopes of finding her a forever home. She had been at Lifeline in Fulton County since January with no interest from potential fosters. When she arrived at Lifeline she was skin and bones with very little hair. She was lactating & had obviously had a recent litter of puppies; but Lifeline was never able to locate the puppies. Eventually Lula was moved to the Lifeline Avondale Estates location where there are fewer animals & where she could get more attention. Her foster parents took good care of her and publicized her availability. We met her & fell in love. When I received her paperwork from Lifeline I learned that she was picked up brought to Lifeline on January 27th - my birthday! (Steve’s) Even though it was March when she came to us, she was the best birthday gift ever.

From her foster parents.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Long walks in Piedmont Park to meet new friends & relaxing time in the lounger by the backyard pool.

What is life like since you rescued Lula Mae? Best word is “joyful”!

Photographers Note: Lula Mae is one of those dogs that your heart just melts when you meet her. She is so quiet and even a little stoic but those dark soulful eyes just draw you in. All she wants to do is be close to you. They are not kidding that she is a hugger. This is not a dog jumping up on someone and their parents say “Oh she wants to give you a hug” This sweet girl literally wraps her arms around your waist and squeezes. When she hugged me, she just stared up into my face with a sweet quiet expression, as if to say” Hello new friend”. She was known for this at the shelter and the employees would line up to get a hug from Lula Mae when she would visit. She will forever be known to me as the #huggingpibble. This sweet girl hit the jackpot on her forever home with Steve & David, & they with her.

Smiling Charlie Girl

Smiling Charlie Girl

Goofy Mio!

Rescue Stories: Charlie was my 1st Friends of the Forlorn foster.

A woman found Charlie and her daughter wandering a highway. They were both almost hairless with mange; she took them to a vet them reached out to FTTF for help. They came to live at my work until a foster/forever home was found. I immediately fell for Charlie and wanted her. My husband vetoed the idea. rightly so we had an eldery shepard. Charlie recovered from her mange and was adopted. I cried happy tears. A few months later I received a call saying that Charlie was being returned and had no where to go..Our shepard had passed so my husband reluctantly agreed to foster and only foster Charlie. Tony slept with one eye open that 1st night as Charlie slept by his head. He had fallen victim to the media hype. It was after only a few days that he said she was staying.

Charlie is an ambassador for pitbulls everywhere.. She goes anywhere she can with us. She  loves to socialize with people..She is my sidekick. Stood at my side when we renewed our vows.,my buddy, our 1st pit bull.

Mio was under rabies quarantine at the pound at 11 weeks old.. When his quarantine was up his family never came for him. Labeled a bite dog Mio could not be adopted out to the public. It was rescue or.... Even though we had just taken in a broken Fé a month before how could we say no to that??

Even though Mio was an adoptable dog, we decided after 2 years to foster fail with him. Since not only had we fallen for him, his harder to adopt best friend Fé & he had formed such a bond we couldn’t break them up.. foster fail 3&4!

What a difference a loving home makes.

Sweet puppy Mio, enjoying his forever lap!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Charlie and I frequent a local waterfall. It is our happy place. She loves hanging in the water. We are working hard on Mio’s leash manners and would love to have him be our go everywhere guy as Charlie is getting older and cannot do some of the more adventurous adventures.

What is life like since you rescued Charlie & Mio? Life has been a wild ride since the addition of Charlie. She showed us how amazing these guys are. We have continued to foster/volunteer for FTTF which has brought us closer together.

Mio,Fé,and Austin are foster fails also Track is an FTTF dog also..13 have come and gone..

Because of Charlie we have a house full of pits, 4 rotations but we would not have it any other way....All are alive, happy and healthy

Add to the entertainment factor with Mio!

Photographers Note: As you read above Pam & Tony have a lot of dogs and this requires some logistics to keep the peace in the house. Their dedication to all of their pups is truly inspiring and heart warming because they “make it work” every day, where others would deem it to be too difficult. So when it came time to select which dogs she wanted to feature she chose Charlie & Mio. They aren’t the best of friends so we did their sessions separately. Charlie at her favorite waterfall (which due to the lack of rain in our area was minus the water) & Mio back at their house.

Charlie is the cutest little low rider & for this reason I was ok photographing her with that jersey on; being an Atlanta Falcons fan and all! Her snorts and those sweet soulful eyes just make you smile immediately. Mio is just a handsome boy with a lot of energy. The day had gotten so warm and he was just not at all interested in posing for me. He wanted to see what was happening in his neighborhood instead. After some coaxing I was able to capture his silly personality mixed with those good looks.

  3. She can’t get close enough

  4. Snuggle Bug

  5. Master Snorer

What makes Coco unique? Coco smiles. She has HUGE smiles and when she’s happy she does a little dance and shakes her bootie. She’s laser focused on the humans in her family—she patrols the house to make sure she knows where everyone is and she follows me around like a shadow. She allows our daughters to literally lay all over her—it’s as if she loves it! Unlike any other dog I’ve ever had, Coco will stare into your eyes for as long as you will let her. It’s almost like she’s looking into your soul. She’s the sweetest dog I’ve even known. We often say that we are luckier to have her than she is to have us.

The sun shines down on her beautiful smile!

Rescue Story: We moved to Atlanta three and a half years ago. We’ve always been a family with two dogs (we think dogs are happier with a furry partner). Shortly before our move from Washington, DC we lost one of our dogs to cancer. We knew we wanted to get another dog but thought it would be best to wait for the dust to settle from the move, house hunt, etc. In August on 2016 we were settled and ready to adopt. I immediately started looking at the Fulton County Animal Shelter website for available dogs. All of the pictures gave me such heartache, so we decided to just go the shelter as a family.

We walked the corridors around all of the animal cages and saw literally hundreds of dogs. So many that it was overwhelming. There were lots of volunteers there that day…I guess they were walking the dogs, feeding the dogs, and helping to facilitate adoptions. After trying to “meet” several dogs (they organize the meetings in outdoor enclosures) I had a volunteer approach me and tell me that she has a dog in mind for us. We waited as a family out in the enclosure and she brought out our Coco. My husband was sitting in a chair and Coco gently approached him with her head down and ears flat, she put her head in his lap and we knew she was the dog for our family. Coco was terrified, but so very sweet and it was love at first sight. How could we have walked by all those cages and not seen her?? Too many dogs, I guess.

We were told that Coco was picked up by animal control after someone called to report an injured dog in the back yard. She was terribly underweight (almost starved), she clearly had delivered at least a couple litters of puppies, and she had what looked like a cigarette burn on the bottom of her back foot. Her coat had mange and she had patches of fur missing from malnourishment. She was at the Fulton County Animal shelter for about six weeks before we brought her home. After bringing her home we had a few bumps in the road bringing her back to 100% healthy, Coco spent a week in the Vet’s ICU with pneumonia. She survived.

She weighed 40 pounds when we brought her home—she now weighs 73 pounds. Her fur is a gorgeous glistening brown color, all but a little spot on her tail has returned.

In addition to her health problems, Coco was terrified of fire, cars, storm drains, grates in the road, and walking on a leash. We immediately brought a fabulous dog trainer to the house and after consistent work, those fears died. She is a completely normal dog, now.

Coco is a cherished member of our family. We couldn’t imagine life without her! Everyone who meets her loves her.

Coco’s intake photo, what a different a loving family makes!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We are a very active family and Coco is always in the mix. Coco loves long walks in the neighborhood (our regular walk is about four miles). Just last weekend we went to Tennessee to visit family. The dogs always travel with us and it was particularly fun for Coco because I took the dogs on a seven mile hike. She had never walked that far before and the terrain was challenging. She did very well—I was proud of her.

Candidly, I think Coco’s favorite thing is snuggling on the couch with her humans. She simply cannot get close enough. She will sit on top of you if you’ll let her.

What is life like since you rescued Penny? We’ve rescued many dogs. I’ve never known life without a dog. I tell people that we are luckier to have Coco than she is to have us (even though that isn’t entirely true we couldn’t love her any more than we already do). All rescue dogs are special. All they need is love. Their love for us is unconditional. I never thought I would own a pit bull, but I now know that I will probably always have one living in my home. They are a remarkable breed.

Photographers Note: I agree Coco is a beautiful dog with that shiny coat and those bright amber eyes; you would never even recognize she is the dog from the picture above. She greeted me at the door and was eager to show me around her home. The girls led the way to the backyard and although she was happy to show me her backyard, she was really not so into getting her picture taken. She would have much rather just sat in my lap, given kisses and have me snuggle and pet her. (which truth be told, that is always my preference as well) She even spit out both flavors of dog treats I had in my bag, tough room! :)

What I love about this story is this amazing family looked beyond what they saw on the outside at the shelter; a sick, malnourished pup who was frightened of everything and instead with that one action of her putting her head in Josh’s lap; they saw the dog she would become with love and a family that adores her. As I left their home, with Coco standing in the doorway, her expression saying where is my new friend going? I have to think if more people thought this way, our shelters would be far less full.

Penny - 8/14/19

Name/Age: Penny - 8 y/o

Family Members: Maggie & Sean

How long has Penny been in the family? 8 years

Professions: Sean - IT Consultant Manager Maggie - Food Critic and Freelance Journalist

Location: Chicago, IL

Nicknames: Mushy, Mushes, Mushy Peas, Cheej (pronounced “Cheese”), Cheej Dragon, Mrs, Mrs P, Squishy

5 words/phrases that best describe Penny?

  1. Special

  2. Lazy

  3. Wiggly

  4. Whiny

  5. Stinky

What makes Penny unique? She doesn’t really bark; but she makes lots of noises. Sighs when comfy, groans / loudly exhales when she tries to get your attention, moans when you scratch her ears in the right spot. She’s very attuned to us and our every move, sometimes staring from one of us to the other like she’s enthralled in a very good tennis match. She might even have her own voice, which sounds a lot like Gollum (to those who’ve seen Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies).

Teefs!

Rescue Story: Rescued Penny through One Tail at a Time, a Chicago animal rescue with a progressive dog adoption program that supports under-resourced animal shelters and pet families.

We first met a 6 month old Penny in the suburbs at her foster mom’s house. Within a week we started our 2 week foster program to make sure we were ready to become dog parents. By the end of day 1 of our foster program, we knew Penny would become part of our family.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Playing “fetch” with one of her many toys. Fetch is in quotes because she’s actually not great at it. But she loves when we toss a toy on the wood floor and she chases it down and surfs on it with her front paws until it slides into the rug and stops moving. We also love watching movies on the couch as a family.

What is life like since you rescued Penny? We find joy in every single day, no matter how stressful, sad or challenging. She makes us laugh and loves us boundlessly. For her, life improved immensely mainly through being totally spoiled. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. We love this creature to bits!

Photographers Note: Lucky to discover another coworker with a pittie and take advantage of that on a work trip. This sweet girl just has the best smile but what I discovered is that she is a model in the making. When going through all the photos I took, most of which she was pulling a full on Cindy Crawford, it was a challenge to find one where her big smile was on display. So many different expressions from this little girl! Not only is Penny spoiled (her Grandma may have made a huge pillow with an image of her face on it for her parents), she is also a fighter. She is a cancer survivor and as she ages maybe slowing down a bit (aren’t we all) but you would never guess it. Her excitement to meet a new friend or just be happy to be with her parents, is always there with the wiggle in full motion! When you look into those soulful eyes of hers, all you see is “ Hi, I’m Penny, are we friends now?”

Banksy - 8/13/19

Name/Age: Banksy - 1 year & 5mths

How long has Banksy been in the family? Almost a full year!

Profession: Creative branding, marketing, communications & a multi-media artist

Location: Chicago, IL.

Nicknames: Banks, Beetle, Beetlejuice, Shortstop, Ladybug, Lil Bug, Bigsby, BooBoo, Sparkplug, Beesley, Dinky, Binky, Binx, Lil B

5 words/phrases that best describe Banksy?

  1. Sweet

  2. Playful

  3. Curious

  4. Attitude

  5. Kisses

What makes Banksy unique?

● Her legs are so short, that when she sits normally, her butt doesn’t touch the ground. More often that not, you’ll find her rocking the upward facing dog (everyone comments how they’ve never seen a dog sit like that before)

● She snorts like a little piggy!

● She has this signature tuck and roll move when she’s running around with other dogs. People always think their dog knocked her over, but it is a strategic move she makes deliberately to throw off the other dogs

● She loves to use her small size to weave in and out from under benches to tease larger dogs who are chasing her

● She walks/waddles with some serious swagger

● She loves to sleep in and go to sleep early!

Play Time!!

Play Time!!

Rescue Story: When I knew I was ready to rescue, I followed various resuce groups on Instagram I wasn’t looking for a particular breed, but was waiting for the dog who I felt a connection with. The second I saw her face, I knew she was the one. I met her at her foster’s the following week, and took her home with me that same night.

She had been next on the kill list at a shelter in Calhoun, Georgia where she was brought in as a stray. In Our Hands rescued her and brought her to New York, where we met :)

Carried to her forever home in a purple bag!

What is your favorite pastime as a family?

● I love taking her to the dog park and watching her and her little legs run around. She is very laid back in the house, but the second it’s time to play she is an endless ball of energy and she always runs the show.

● Dog beach

● Snuggling on the couch

● Playing her version of fetch at the park which involve a her diving headfirst at the ball, somersaulting, and missing it completely

● Going to grab puppacinos at Starbucks

What is life like since you rescued Banksy? Life is wonderful! I hop out of bed in the morning because I love the time I get to spend with her before starting work. We have lived in 3 different places in less than a year and have loved exploring the different neighborhoods together. She is very loved by me, my family, and my friends and she knows it. She is a much happier dog than the one I met back in September.

Social Media: Instagram: @banksyisadog

Photographers Note: I am so fortunate that I work with Banksy’s Mom and when I go to our Chicago dog friendly office I get to squeeze on this adorable nugget! Truth be told I am a little obsessed with her. She is the cutest, sassiest, squattiest little girl and you just want to cuddle her and kiss her.

During a work trip, I coordinated with Sydnee to meet up after the work day to do our photo shoot at a park near their house and I got to see the ball of energy side of her. She just ran and ran. Wasn’t intimidated by the big dogs, even used some questionable tactics to keep up with a large golden (something with the other dogs bandanna, we won’t talk about it ). She wasn’t shy about sneaking in on other dogs water bowls when she did a break; so much sass! She really is just a riot. Then afterwards we went to a restaurant and sat on the patio and she settled right down. I am pretty sure she slept hard and went to bed pretty early that night!

Shadow - 7/21/19

Name/Age: Shadow - 6.5 y/o

Family Members: Tara

How long has Shadow been in the family? 6 years

Profession: Full time accounting assistant, part time babysitter/nanny

Location: Newnan, GA

Nicknames: Shadow Seven, Sha-row, Mama, Bug, Little One

5 words/phrases that best describe Shadow?

  1. Snuggler

  2. Protector/Mama’s Girl

  3. Lover of naps in cozy blankets

  4. Stubborn!

  5. Age is just a number; she’s still got the energy of the pup I rescued at 6 months old

What makes Shadow unique? She loves people but is protective. Not in an aggressive way but more of a “you’re too close to my human, here are my paws against you with my wiggly body to let you know; & also, here’s a kiss because I love you too but I love her more.”

Beautiful Girl!

Rescue Story: I’m originally from Annapolis, Maryland. I grew up with dogs and, in my lifetime, think our family has gone without a dog for total of maybe 3 weeks. When I was living on my own, I reached out to my landlord to see if it was okay to begin trying to adopt a dog and she was so on board (bless her, she was amazing, loved dogs herself and was in no way breed restrictive when I said I was looking at the SPCA, rescues & animal control.) I went numerous places looking for dogs and even applied for 6. I went to the SPCA near my house after work one night to see what dogs were available. I didn’t even see Shadow (Bonnie as they had named her) when I walked by because she was asleep in a ball (still how she sleeps) in the back corner of her enclosure. Apparently, she saw me though and as I got just out of view of her, I hear a bowl of food go flying and this little wiggle worm of a dog throw herself up against the door on her back legs, bat ears at the ready, to say, “WAIT, here I am!” I knew she was the one. I applied for her on the spot and on Mother’s Day 2013, I got to go pick her up. I thought I was going to name her Chesney (I love me some Kenny ha) but once I got her home, I realized that wasn’t her name at all. Upon meeting her, a friend told me she was like a piece of Velcro to me; my little shadow. Thus, she was named Shadow Seven (she was the seventh dog I applied for) and the rest is history!

Bye Bye SPCA - I am heading to my forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? She loves walks but is so stubborn that when she decides she’s done, there is no changing her mind and I may end up having to carry her the rest of the way home. I also recently discovered through doggie daycare that despite hating baths, she loves the kiddie pools filled with water they have there so I’m planning on taking her someplace with water in the future. Why she couldn’t figure this out when we lived on & with complete access to the water for 3 years is beyond me!

What is life like since you rescued Shadow? I used to be able to sit down without immediately having a 50lb dog come and sit or lay on me, eat without someone staring at every bite I took and leave a room, knowing I was coming right back, without 4 paws following me like I was leaving on some long voyage. I wouldn’t trade it though. She was 6 months old when I rescued her so we still got to experience a lot of her firsts together and learn/teach each other new things. She’s so stubborn, always down for naps, loves treats and gets vocal when not getting her way; she’s basically me in 4-legged, full body wag form 😊

Photographers Note: I met up with Tara & Shadow in Piedmont Park on a beautiful day with the sun shining to show off Shadow’s shiny coat! This sweet girl has so many looks about her; she can be very regal or really goofy, it just depends on when and how you capture her. Then of course there are those amazing ears!!! She really did so great during the photo shoot even with all the distractions of people and dogs all around. She even got to spend some time watching the ducks on the water for a bit! There really is something special about one person and one dog, and seeing the special bond they share!

Basil - 7/14/19

Name: Basil - 2.5 y/o

Family Members: Trizzie (Basil used to have an older fur-sister, but she passed away from a heart condition November 2017, 4 months after Basil came into our lives.)

How long has Basil been in the family? He has been with me for 2 years now.

Profession: Professional Dog Walker/Caretaker

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: Bahsil (a funny way of saying Basil), Bagel, Big Head, Big Pookie

5 words/phrases that best describe Basil?

  1. Always down to clown around

  2. Happy-Go-Lucky

  3. Mama’s Boy

  4. Adventurous

  5. Loyal

What makes Basil unique? If I had to list just one behavior or trait that makes Basil special, it would be that heʼs always down for anything. We can be couch potatoes and heʼs okay with that. We can go on a hike at Arabia Mountain, go to a brewery, or lay down in the grass at the park and he would have no complaints. He comes with me when I dog sit for other people or to walk their dogs and again, heʼs totally cool with tagging along. If I go to the movies, he doesnʼt mind taking a nap in the car. He enjoys anything and anyone I bring into his life and is truly the best all around buddy ever!

Ball time in the park!

Rescue Story: Basil first came into my life April 15, 2017, but it took a few weeks before there was nothing and no one jeopardizing us being together. He was around 5 months old when our story started. Wandering the streets without any tags, or even a collar, he ended up following my friend home. Unfortunately, my friend couldnʼt care for him, so I decided to take in the little guy. The timing couldnʼt have been more perfect because I had been wanting a second dog for a while to be a buddy to Angel, my 14 year old chipoo. The night I first laid eyes on him in person, he reminded me of an old grandpa. I didnʼt know what was wrong, but there was sadness in his eyes and droopiness in him. Over the next 24 hours, I would come to learn that he had worms, severe diarrhea, and some separation anxiety. But, the biggest scare of all was yet to happen. When I came home from Easter service, 1 and 1/2 days after I brought him home, I noticed Basil had thrown up again. His energy levels had been pretty decent the previous day, but at this moment, he looked defeated. I was worried about him, but lack of experience and the fact that most clinics were closed on Easter Sunday would be the reasons I couldnʼt do much but monitor him closely for the time being. To this day, I can replay the exact moment when I figured out what was wrong and knew I couldnʼt wait any longer to get help. I had taken Basil outside to use the bathroom and immediately, he squatted down to take a number two. Abruptly, similar to the swiftness of a bullet after pulling the trigger, a reddish brown puddle came out. Never mind the bizarre color and consistency, the odor smelled like death. At that moment, I knew I had to find a clinic that had any chance of being opened. BluePearl Pet Hospital was the only one. There, my suspicion of parvo was confirmed. I didnʼt have enough money to cover treatment, but I also knew I wouldnʼt be able to live with myself if money was the reason he lost his life. The predicament overwhelmed me to the point of sobbing. Luckily, the staff at Blue Pearl worked with me, offering to start treatment with just a partial payment while I figured out a way for the rest. Through Go Fund Me, I was able to see friends and strangers come together to help this little puppy and that was truly amazing. While he was in the hospital for 3-4 days, a girl saw Basilʼs Go Fund Me photos, recognized him, and reached out to my friend, saying she knew who he belonged to. She explained to my friend that the people had just gotten the puppy and didnʼt have the time to go get his shots or anything else. I was worried these people would take him away and I didnʼt trust heʼd be cared for the way he deserved. But, I knew the right thing to do was give them a chance. After all, he was their puppy; maybe the whole thing really was just an accident and I was just being bitter. When I reached out to the girl, all she said was that they wanted to help with the hospital bills and to come see him. Some time had passed by and I hadnʼt heard anything from her, so I messaged her again. And that was basically it. For the first time, getting ghosted was a good thing. Basil and I were meant to be together from the start. And Iʼm thankful thatʼs exactly how our story played out.

Basil is Home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Basil, Angel, and I used to live together with my best friend, Christina, and her pup, Dayz, so to him, the five of us were a family. He absolutely adore his auntie and cousin. One time, Basil and I were on a walk around the neighborhood. Meanwhile, Christina and Dayz were also on a walk around the neighborhood, though we hadnʼt crossed paths yet. Basil, sensing that his auntie and cousin were close by, but couldnʼt be seen anywhere, stood up on his hind legs to gain more height for a better view. When describing the moment to me, Christina said she had no idea we were close by or that he was waiting for her. So, when she turned the corner and the first thing she saw was this Pointer-Pit mix standing on his hind legs like a human, calmly staring right back at her as if this was nothing out of the ordinary, she couldnʼt help but find the moment so humorous and memorable. Typical goofy Basil.

What is life like since you rescued Basil? Life has been amazing since Basil has come into my life. I have learned so much about my genuine self, what I want in life, and what I am capable of the two years Iʼve spent with Basil so far versus the 23 years without. He is the courage I had been missing most of my life. Basil coming into my life is too perfect not be fate. I donʼt know who knew I would need him and sent him to be my guardian, companion, and navigator through life, but I know someone had to have done that. People say this all the time about their animals, but Basil is truly living his best life with me. Everyday is an adventure for the both of us. Probably to him, I saved his life, but for me, heʼs helped me start truly living mine.

Photographers Note: I met up with Basil & Trizzie in a beautiful shaded park in town. I was quite taken by how handsome Basil is. His markings and those light eyes are quite a combination. I could have probably spent hours taking his photo! As they say, he was not just a pretty face. He had the sweetest personality. He was pretty focused on his ball playing but when I would get on the ground to get better angles, he was all about coming over to me and saying hello. Talk about resilient and a fighting spirit, you would never guess this sweet boy had been so sick as a puppy! Now he is a happy, fun loving guy living his Best Life with his Mom. The bound between these two is truly special.
